I'm lost here, ultralite tech advice anyone?

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

I'm lost here, ultralite tech advice anyone?

Post by Iambetacloud »

Okay, I'm gonna sound like a complete idiot here:

I recently purchased a Motu ultralite mk3, and an Allen and Heath zed 14 board. I'm using Ableton Live 7 as a daw- The only hardware effect I'm using with them is a BBE 362 sonic maximizer.

Okay, it may seem like a really broad question...

What's the best way to configure these; specifics on cables/connections, etc, (I'm a noob, haha).
There's gotta be a guru out there that can help.

thanks and best-

Ableton in the computer, computer connected to Ultralite.
Utralite's outputs connected to A&H line inputs.
A&H Aux Sends connected to BBE's inputs.
BBE's outputs connected to A&H's Send returns.
A&H group outs connected to Ultralite's inputs.

Is this it?

Very kind of you, thanks. Here's what I got just for monitoring:

ultralite mains to stereo in's, main outs, (xlr), to krk sub, krk sub to monitors.

So I tried aux outs to bbe ins, bbe ins to insert l&r, and I get nothing, (unless I short the plug, but then I'm in mono).

The bbe is unbalanced jacks, but the board is balanced. Should I be using balanced cables?

ugh.

Thanks and let me know if you can-

There's something wrong here.
You have to choose between using the BBE as a Send fed effect or as an Insert fed effect.
You can only feed each of his Inputs in one way at a time.

If you decide to have the BBE available to all the channels in the console you should feed it from an Aux Send and BBE's outputs should be Sent back to the console through Aux Returns.
You can also send BBE's outs to a pair of normal channels in the console in wich case you have to be careful not to send its own channels back to itself throgh those channels Aux sends; feedback...

If you wich to use the BBE as a dedicated Insert on selected channels you should have a properly made cable (usually a Y cable) where one end has a TRS jack, for the A&H channel inserts, and the opposite end has a pair of TS jacks, one for BBE's input and one for the Ouptut.
To find out wich of these two TS jacks is the In or the Out you have to either check the A&H diagram and know how your Y cable was made, or else, easier, try it both ways.

I don't know if this helps but at the moment it seems your only difficulty is connecting the BBE to the Allen Heath, right?

Yeah, it seems a bit strange, should I be routing the bbe into the motu?
