PT8 has a compositing feature. I wonder if this is something they copped from DP6 or if it is just a coincidence...

Seriously, until Digi introduces complete ADC, plus AU or VST support, plus a few more similar no-brainers into their native systems (PT LE) I don't think they can compete with any other native DAW, don't care what their market share is. I mean, can you imagine running DP with no ADC, using MAS plugs only? Using no hardware but MOTU's own? Ridiculous. Does PT LE v8 at least finally offer unlimited track count?

Now PT HD is admittedly very very nice, but even compared to that I'm not missing a single feature, nor cutting corners in sound quality, nor running out of processing power since I upgraded to an 8core for my DP-based native system. Of course this includes 3rd-party AD/DA converters and plug-ins, but I would have to get those for an HD system as well... who wants to run Digi plugs and Digi AD/DA exclusively? So why the substantial extra expense for HD hardware? Not feelin' it...


PS: Logic did the comping feature first, DP6 adopted and expanded on it, now PT catches up. It's the way competition works, and it's a beautiful thing...!

Ah yes, I forgot, for some $2k extra you actually can almost match the functionality of DP... except of course ADC, AU implementation, etc etc. No seriously, PT LE always cracked me up.

Yep, my PTLE (002) rack is going to remain as a dongle enabling me to do my post-recording-at-a-PT-studio editing at home rather than paying studio rates to do it before I import the tracks back into DP to finish the job.

Seriously though, the scoring (most likely a very watered down version of sibelius) plus the new MIDI tools (whatever they are), may, just possibly, make it a viable platform for composing and MIDI programming, which could definitely affect Logic & DP sales. They've still got a long way to catch up though, and I don't see too many people buying an HD rig to do sequencing on.

If you look at the screen shots of PT, it looks a lot like DP6 with the different darker mods (check out the new PT mixer). Well, I have to take the plunge and buy PT anyways because the studio I work in only uses PT, and I need to take tracks home to edit in DP, as I don't want to use the studio time to convert files. At least it's better than PT 7, and, wow, I get 48 tracks .

Forgive my ignorance, but how in the world can anything get done in PT without ADC? Is there a workaround of some kind?

That's probably one of the best observations I've heard all day. I was talking to a number of other people about PT8, all of whom echoed everything said so far on this thread. It's so remarkable that it all must be true!! LOL!!

Anyway, the big question was "why buy an HD rig"? The most unanimous answer was that there had to be very good reasons to drop some heavy coin on it. Money, of course, was the con, but staying compatible and competitive were strong pros where being compatible and competitive would generate revenue to justify the investment. This was a very different observation from the need to remain productive, which we all agreed did not necessitate using Pro Tools.

But before we all parted ways to return to our various non-PT systems, the conversation ended with the question-- "But what if, by some freak of nature, it just works?"

I have to say that in all the sessions at the studio using PT, it hasn't crashed once (2 different rooms using two different versions - 7.4 and 6.9.3 -still no crashes...). Maybe it just works, and that's what clients need to see...
