Problems with XP 32 bit drivers ... 3.6.8.1

Hi All,
I just recently built a new PC based on a Asus P5K-E mobo, Q6600 processor, 4gb Corsair RAM and 512 MB graphics card. XP Pro with SP3.
My older DAW was based on an 865/875 mobo from Asus and my 896 worked fine with 3.6.7.3. with the same amount of RAM and XP Pro SP3
The new DAW enables me to install the drivers and MOTU's Audio Console pops up and shows me that the unit is working ... am able to change sample rates etc. No conflicts in Device Manager as well.
However, when i open Logic 5.5.1 and select the MOTU ASIO driver as the primary sound device driver, logic tells me that it cannot see the unit and won't relaunch.
I'm using the Agere FW chipset that MOTU recommends so it can't be FW related ...
This is my second 896 ... the first got fried around 11/07 and i guess this is a re-furbished unit but the unit should work ok.
Are the drivers 'broken?' and is anyone else experiencing problems with 3.6.8.1.
thanks
