Seting up Monitors with an 192HD

This is a very NOOB question so hang on.
I just purchased a 192HD along with most of the other items to get a home studio working i.e. powered JBL monitors etc.. and in trying to set things up, I've run into a snag...
How should I connect and set up my monitors? I've tried several options and had basically the same problem. From Nuendo I've routed the output of the stereo out bus to the 1 and 2 outputs on the 192, I've also tried other outputs and when playing back, I always get a tremendous amount of signal on the right channel which is highly distorted along with some scratchy distortion on the left channel.
Any ideas? This is rather frustrating, since I know it's not the monitors and the signal at the channel level is not over-driven but between the channel output and the stereo output bus, especially the right side, the signal strength goes way up.
Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
