DP using Logic

Hey guys
I m using Logic8 with my DP5......
I bought logic8 with a mind to shift to logic some months back,
but I was so used to DP,and also for some features which are only available in
DP,I didn't get the workflow with Logic. But I was impressed with the amazing
70GB sound library of Logic.
So,I searched a way to use Logic sounds, its beautyful softsynths, and very handy channelstrips with DP,keeping DP as my master sequencer.
...and I got it.....
I hooked both the DAWs simply using IAC.
I m using all Logic synths,as sound source and DP as MIDI sequencer in the same machine from last 3months!
Its quite interesting,you are getting
all the good things from both...
Its quite usefull, also cost effective because Logic8 comes witha very good
library jost for a few hundreds of bucks!

.
That's nice!
So you have the best of both worlds

(as long as you keep DP as your main DAW

)
Are Logic's instruments really
that good, BTW? I keep hearing strong opposing opinions. And a lot of people just get logic because of the sounds and instruments... what kind of music are you into?

Many of the Logic stock VI's and plugins are quite good. At the $499 price point it's a steal IMHO. The ideal situation for workflow is exactly what the OP describes: use DP and Logic in tandem and add in a few carefully selected plugins, and you're set.

give some more info on IAC, I looked it up and found "internal audio controller" as a definition, but nothing regarding any models or programs, could use a little more explanation please, this interests me a lot.

I have both and wouldn't mind a bone head walk through on how to get the iac thing working if you have time.
Re Logic's sounds: for the price of admission it's kind of a no brainer. I just upgraded to 8 based on the extra sfx samples.
Side note: I was just at a TV composer seminar at audiomidi.com yesterday and all the composers on the board were using Logic. I was curious as to why but it might have something to do with the fact that they're also all using the apogee symphony system which gives you ultra low latency in Logic (even if your buffer is at 512). They had all their PCs (most had around 7) all linked with the apoggee cards. They never got into it. They were definitely pitching the apoggee setup though.

Yeah I am up for hearing about the iac set up...
I am using soundflower and it works one instrument at a time...

I got it working. As always, you have to get things going in logic's environment. If someone else doesn't post how to do it I'll do so later when I can think about what I did to get it to work!

I can trigger MIDI instruments in logic from dp and have it play back in dp via soundflower. Can also sync logic to DP so as to use logic's loops. I have a feeling I'll never reall use this system just because it's a tad bit of a pain. I'll have to have a template ready to go with maybe some key softsynths that I find useful in Logic. Time will tell.

I think so, FM. I'm not quite to where the OP is yet, in fact I'm having trouble setting Logic up as a 'multitimbral module' but I do use their drums, so far in Mainstage, the 'live instrument' component of Logic 8.

nk_e -- I have not done with Logic, but I have done it with Mainstage, which comes with logic as a live performance tool for their instruments. I would expect it would work just the same logic too.
What I did is follow the directions in this MOTU technote:
How do I use my GarageBand instruments with DP?

Here's the thread where I talk more about it:

Do you have access to the plug-ins of Logic as well?
I will try the IAC for sure.

I/ve been using IAC to run Kontakt or Play standalone with Logic and DP. It works, but ......... the latency makes it tough to do any precision stuff (read, percussion) I've got DP or Logic both set to 512 because of the strain of using Play on my 2x2.5 G5.
OS 10.4.9
Is anyone getting IAC to work with reasonable latency?

Yes, just yesterday I finally got it going, Apple's Prettiest Logic expert told me to go to Settings/Recording/ and turn on Autodemix by Channel when Multi-Recording. That was the clue I didn't have, to get the different Channel Strips to respond to DP's Tracks' different MIDI Channels. (output via a new output I created in InterApplication MIDI)... so Logic became a multitimbral module finally. SoundFlower's 16 channels sent the audio back into DP's Audio Track Inputs, but . . .
the Latency. . . exactly as you say, esteso, useless for precision of any sort. . . but the good thing was, it led me to finally explore the Drum Editor. Even with the pencil, having that Grid right there and many good sounds on Logic's drum kits on their channel strips, was invitation to creation.
Maybe a way to go, is to record ones MIDI performances into Logic, (I know, kinky after DP's cool elegance...) and then transfer the MIDI into DP, massage it further with our superior DPtools, and only then record Audio Tracks, when it's like a dump, DP MIDI back into Logic like a big VI, while Logic's Audio is going back into DP via SoundFlower.
Latency wouldn't be an issue because no one's 'playing' at the time?

Can you please outline the procedure for getting more then on channel to work in Logic at a time.
thanks

I thought I just did, Sir Waxman.
Settings/ (not prefs)
Recording/
and then check that "Demix" box.
Just set up a bunch of instruments,
put them on different MIDI channels (in the 2nd down-opening menu tab in the Inspector Field in the Arrange Window.)
In DP, Interapplication MIDI - create a new output, call it DP1, e.g. Rout your MIDI tracks to that., DP1-1, DP1-2, etc.
In Logic, go to Environment, choose Ports and Clicks, or something like that, on the Left, and connect the SUM output (which should include DP output now) to Sequencer Input.
