i am going crazy with the spinning beachball!!!
it's spinning all day long. everything i do gets the beachball.

- i select a new MIDI track beachball.
- i open the event window beachball
- i close the event window beachball
- i rewind to the top beachball

this is absolutely insane!!!

MacPro 8 core with 9 gigs ram, OS 10.5.4, DP6 (new drive and fresh install) 32mb buffer OS drive (spinpoint 750)
828 mkII

1 instance of MachFive 2

all MIDI no audio tracks.

any ideas?

Have you done the regular maintenance etc?

That is what i have found with DP also. I have a 8 core running DP 5.... whatever but is not very well optimized. It bogs down all the time and is far from peppy. I switched a while back to Cubase 4 and it just rips in comparison, anything on the fly, with no beach ball. I was really hoping they would deal with this instead of adding more code to bog things down even more.

Here's one of the new tricks on the block for 6--

Keep your trash bin empty.

And carryovers from DP5--

Trash DP Prefs

It may also help *under certain circumstances*, depending upon the cause of the SBBs, to rebuild your bundles if you are using bundles created in DP5.

There may also be some benefit to swapping out the MAS/AU bundle in DP6 and using the one installed with DP5 (if you still have it...)

Try 1024 and either high for a motu interface or low for non motu.

Beachballs w/a G5 dual 2.0 as well

FYI to MOTU and all w/this prob, I'm having the same BB prob with an older G5 dual 2.0. Keep my system clean and this starts happening with only a few tracks going in Mach5! Putting the buffer to 1024 isn't an option if you're MIDI sequencing. Even 512 is pushing it for latency reasons. Im really perplexed by the general pokiness of the everything. In DP5 I could load up my sequences w/tons of plugs, VI's and 10-15 audio tracks and still run at buffer 512. It wouldn't slow down just to change a record enabled track, but DP6 can't handle that w/out a BB with close to nothing going on! Sorry for the rant, but I'm realizing this is a serious problem, and wanted those w/8 core macs to know.

Yeah... I'm having similar problems.

After several days of playing around with DP6 and having no crashes or hangs, I am suddenly having them on tonight's project.

I have had at least 4 beachballs which hung DP, all of them happening while I was editing MIDI notes in either the MIDI or sequence editor. I had to quite the program using Activity Monitor. I swapped that AU bundle hoping it would resolve the problem, but it didn't prevent a further hang. (Got my SoundToys working again, though.)

This kinda sucks, since I had almost convinced myself to start working in DP6 fulltime... but now I'll have to consider just going back to 5.11 until we get an update.

And ALSO... I noticed it was taking 2-3 times longer (every time) to save that project in DP6 versus the same project in DP5.

Hey Zed,

Looks like your problem is even worse. Bummer. I haven't had one crash yet thankfully, but the pokiness is madening.

While we're at it - for ever, I've used the handy little velocity change box in the graphic editor to change a velocity from a controller. Hugely valuable if you use samples with many layers. BUT NOW in DP6 that feature is no longer engaged, even tho the window is there!!!! Anybody have this problem?

i may have to downgrade back to 5.13

i got this mac just for 6 and hadn't even considered installing 5 at all. now i have to re-evaluate the situation.

1024 is not an option, not with this mac!

**update**

i just removed M5II and the beachball problem seems to have stopped.

What the heck?

Hmm, M5-2 did cause me some problems early on during my shake down w/DP6. And now I have it in every seq in my templates.

Question - did you remove the actual component, or just the instantiation of it in a project file?

Supposedly now you can manage the plug-ins like the old extension manager did, but I dont know if that holds for VI's or samplers.

I wonder if Kontakt would introduce the same BB prob.....

so after more testing it is indeed MachFive 2. it has to do with the streaming as when i turn streaming off on a big patch (Sampletekk Black Grand ambient 350mb) it crashes DP6. i can replace that patch with the Bosendorfer (35mb streaming still on) and the beachball goes away. i can't turn the streaming off for the Black Grand patch as it always crashes.

i'll keep testing

Thanks Homebilly -

I disengaged streaming in the 4 patches I had loaded in M5 2 and things are noticeably better, still not fast like in DP5 but better. I think you're on to something. It sure doesn't figure that a motu product add-on would cause this kind of problem.

The next project I start fresh I'm going to use Kontakt2 and see how DP6 responds. But even w/the project im in now, I'll keep an eye on M5 and the streaming thing and see if I can get DP to speed up a little.

Unlike some other reports I've read, I don't find DP6 to be "zippy" at all. It has a very sluggo feel even with just a few MIDI tracks going on. When I switch back to DP5 it screams in comparison.....
