tracks just stop recording - motu 8pre VAIO Adobe Audition

I'm using the motu 8pre firewire with Adobe Audition on a VAIO laptop. I start recording and it's fine for a while, but tracks have blank spots then stop recording altogether. usually a couple tracks stop after three minutes, then eventually all of them. :cry: we're doing 8 live mics, garage band type stuff. :)

anyone encountered this before? i'm open to troubleshooting suggestions. thanks in advance for the help.
