Can't upgrade firmware on MK3

Hey guys,
I have my mk3 for quite a while now and after getting rid of the initial random beeps by purchasing a Texas Instruments Firewire card, I thought that all is good.

There are two distinct problems I have:
1. Windows sounds are crazy loud and cause clipping and distortion
2. I have a Behringer V-amp (Guitar) on inputs 3-4 (Stereo). The trim is set to +10 and the sound is great. When I power down the MK3 and power it back up, the setting is still at +10, but it sounds like +2. When I click on the trim knob, the setting dowsn't change, but the volume jumps up to +10 again.

I was hoping that the firmware update to 1.05 would do the trick, but for some reason, I can't update. Currently I'm on 1.04 and when I run the firmware updater, I get a window with the following message:

"There are no devices in update state. Please Turn on the device while holding down the Page knob."

The MK3 is in update mode (display says 828 Bootloader v1.01). I tried it with my VIA on-board Firewire port and also my Texas Instruments Firewire Card. I disconnected all cables (except for the firewire cable of course), reset the MK3 to factory defaults and tried again, but nothing seems to work. I opened a ticket with Motu support three days ago and haven't gotten any reply yet.. ..ticket status is "unread".

Any ideas how I can make the update work? I'm desperate...

shutdown pc.

insert firewirecard + connect and turn on the interfaces.

then start the pc.

try again.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm on a regular workstation, not a laptop. The Firewire Card is a PCIe device built into the workstation and I can't remove it without taking it apart. The normal operation mode works fine - no communication issues, but when I boot the mk3 with holding the page knob down, it seems as if there is no connection...

oh sorry i thought you are using a laptop.

hm, well lets try this.

turn off interface > dissconnect the firewire cable.

start the updater on pc, turn on interface while holding the page knob down.
when in updatemode connect the firewirecable.

if this does not work, try this:
turn on interface while holding the page knob down. when in updatemode
connect the firewirecable, then start updater prog.

no other ideas in my brain now

I just tried both variations, but it's still not updating. When I boot my mk3 into firmware update mode, it comes up with a "828 Bootloader v1.01" message on the display. After about 2 seconds the message switches to "Loading Audio Router..." and then it switches back to "828 Bootloader v1.01". Is this the same on your mk3? I was wondering why the mk3 has to load the audio router to perform a firmware update?! I hope I don't have a faulty mk3...

i`ve tested it.
yes it does the same like yours.

the audio router is that one which connects to your pc. ("audiorouter" on the interface talks to the drivers on your pc...)

if the interface is set as primary audio in windows settings this maybe can also be the problem. (so the updater does not recognize it, because it`s in use by another software ect...)

so what can i "say" you?

firewire connection is not the problem also the mk3 should not be the problem.

something with your pc (win audio settings) is 99% the problem.

Since the Wondows sounds are annoyingly loud on the mk3, I'm not using it for any Windows applications anymore. All Windows sound goes through the on-board Realtek HD. I'm only using the mk3 with Cubase4, Reason4, Absynth, Audition3 and Soundforge.

I have an older laptop with a firewire port.. ..I guess I'll give it a try..

Man, this is CRAZY.. ..butit works! Thanks for the link!! I'm on v1.05 now. I'll test my issues later today and see if there is a change with the new firmware. Does anyone have release notes for v1.05?

I think MOTU just released a driver and firmware update for the 828mk3. You might want to go with those new updates since they're the latest and greatest.

The only way I could get the firmware updted to work was basically using the instructions described above.

Short Windows XP instruction set.

1. Uninstall all drivers using Windows uninstaller.
2. Reboot (just in case, your might be abler to skip, but I like to do it).
3. Install new drivers
4. Reboot (just in case, your might be abler to skip, but I like to do it).
5. Connect 828mk3 via firewire, hold down parm button and power up.
KEEP holding power parm button until bootloader message displays
the SECOND time. Windows should recognize device and load MOTU
Audio driver.
6. Run MOTU updater and install new firmware.
7. After update, cucle power and let Windowd load all drivers.

MY ISSUES RESOLVED!!

MOTU posted new drivers and firmware on Friday, 6/20. File name is 828mk3_106ud.zip. Firmware version is 1.06 and driver version is 3.6.8.1328.

These new drivers resolved all my firewire issues, I can now run multiple units and CueMix fx works just fine. I haven't checked driver latency yet, but everything is working through Sonar and Sonar shows a mixer latency of 10.7 ms using the MOTU ASIO drivers.
