Long Save Times.... part 2
I posted a while back about long save times in DP 5.13. I have found the trigger for this. If I have a V-Rack chunk in the file, save times can be from 10 seconds (for files less than 500 KILO bytes) to over a minute for big files. There doesn't have to be anything loaded into the V-Rack. Just having one in the file causes the problem. if I delete the V-Rack, saves are instant for the small files. has anyone heard of this issue?? I am on a Mac Pro 8core (3GHz) with 9GB RAM running Leopard 10.5.2.
Thanks,
David

Since you've mentioned V-Racks, I'll omit the notion of a loaded hard drive being a possible cause.
I've had some tricky times with V-Racks, and I'm using a 3G Quad and 5.13. In fact, I had to stop using V-Racks altogether because if it doesn't take an eternity to load and save it will opt to crash DP altogether.
I've asked about this myself in the past, but so many people chimed in that V-Racks was working well for them. MOTU was also stumped by it.
From April-October last year, I don't know how many times I wiped my drives and reinstalled DP. To be honest, I'm not convinced that 5.13 fixed the crashes. Granted, the crashes and kernel panics have stopped. But I'm more convinced that the removal of V-Racks from all of my projects is closer to the the truth of the remedy.
I know. That doesn't help if you need to use V-Racks, but I'd had enough of crashes taking place every 15-20 minutes that using them was well beyond the point of being counterproductive.
Wish I had more helpful info for you, but I am glad to finally know that I'm not the only one!
Certainly, I wish that my issue with V-Racks were limited to long saves. May crashes ever elude your system!

I'm still in X.4.11, actually. I'm holding off on moving all of my work to Leopard until I'm sure that everything I need has had time to iron out its numerous kinks.
I'm not 100% sure it's Leopard-exclusive since the same symptoms have been seen in Tiger as well.
Many other issues appeared to have been worked out with DP 5.13, but V-Racks wasn't one of them on this end. I mean, it "works", but I just can't modify anything once it's set up without getting a crash. Neither can I swap sequences, which defeats much of the purpose of using V-Racks.

I've found that save times go way up as you increase the number of chunks in a project. Save also seems to slow down when undo history gets big.
YMMV.

hey dont try using Logic this is DP!dgrussell wrote:Ok....heres another thing. A different file with V-Racks in it has no problems saving quickly.... Now Im totally confused because both file originated from the same old file. They have different sounds loaded into the V-Racks and the one with more stuff in it takes less time.... Im lost...

joking aside I have experienced this and other issues with saving- be grateful it's not crash on save....
I was experiencin this slow save for about 2 weeks - then it suddenly went away - I'm sure it was some mac os maintenance that cured.
maybe have a look at your undo prefs?
perhaps try making a new copy of bothersome project? either copy all to new project save and dupe - or save a copy as and dupe - then compact this copy? this has helped me in the past with COS

As I mentioned, these files with the long saves are half a meg. Only one chunk and a v-rack and undo completely flushed.
Now here's another wrinkle, the file that was behaving OK now takes a while to save while its playing. This wasn't doing this before. I have been working in this file but its size is still only 612KB. It saves pretty quickly when not playing but I get the beach ball and it pauses playing if I try to save during play. I've only ever encountered this hiccup in very large files (7MB or bigger) never in small files.
So basically, it seems this problem comes and goes and nothing I've noticed affects it (other than the v-rack)
