DP 4 files opening in DP 5 - can't see virtual instruments?

On my trusty Dual 2.5 G5 running Panther, I was happily using DP 4.52 until the internal drive suffered a physical failure and I had to buy a new drive and re-install everything.

So I upgraded to OS 10.4.11 and DP 5.13. Reinstalled 36 different virtual instruments, the majority running on NI engines.

If I start a new song everything's great, all my instruments and plug-ins instantiate and play fine.

But now, when I open old songs, only some of the Virtual Instruments make a noise, some like Stylus RMX are silent and in italics. I can, of course, instantiate a new RMX instrument that plays fine, but that doesn't give me all the setups there were in that plug-in's instruments and effects in these old songs.

Even more strange: all the virtual instruments that are playing their sounds cannot be opened, double clicking on the name of the instrument in the mixer window opens the tiny little window you get if the output of a plug-in is not properly assigned, but that's not the case with these instruments because their name is not in italics and their sounds are loading and playing, I just can't open the instrument's interface to make any further edits.

Suggestions? Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround?

Thanks!

Hi Rob:

There was a major change in the way DP5.x handles the Bundles-- which were formerly known as Audio Bundles in DP4.

Many people found that they had to rebuild their Bundles-- all audio routing-- from scratch in DP5 to open older projects. It's a pain, but it works.

The good news is that you can now save your Bundle settings to be imported and exported to/from different projects as needed, so the hassle of rebuilding your old bundles is pretty much a one-time ordeal.

Good luck!

What Frodo said!

Also, I've noticed that sometimes I have to rebuild my saved presets in virtual instruments. I am not sure what happens. It may be that I use that same preset in another file, and then alter it somewhat, and maybe that creates some sort of mismatch between what DP remembers having been set-up, and what the plugin VI remembers as the preset. But for some reason, I sometimes have to go in and rebuild the presets in some VI's. I've had a great deal of trouble, actually, with Ivory's presets, and/or Akoustik Piano's.

The problems I experienced when these presets needed rebuilding were strange ones. I'd get a crash at a certain point in the music. Studying the tracks, I'd find absolutely nothing at the "guilty" location to indicate any sort of possible or potential problem. Nothing. Rebuilding the preset was a random, last-resort effort, and it just happened to be the one that fixed it.

So... that's one thing to consider. It may or may not affect you.

Thanks for the speedy replies, but I guess I need a little more help here. I've opened an old DP 4.5 song in 5.13. Stylus RMX is one of the VIs that now shows up in italics in the Tracks window, even though the Instrument's audio output is assigned to a valid audio output. Changing the output of the instrument to other valid outputs doesn't wake it up. The plug-in is also in italics in its insert slot in the Mixer window.

Okay, so I open Bundles. How do I now wake up Stylus RMX? I've poked around in the inputs, outputs, instruments and MIDI devices, it appears nowhere. If I instantiate a new copy of the Stylus instrument, that then appears in my Instruments tab, but doing that doesn't get me all my old settings and instruments that were in the first, and still dead, instantiation.

What step am I missing here? I guess I should add that the same thing is happening with all of my waves plug-ins - all are in italics in the Mixer window's inserts.

Thanks so much for your help!

For the older instance of Stylus, go to its Output column in the Track Overview. Set the output to NONE. Then, reset it to a new, active output to see if that doesn't dislodge things.

Another thing you could do is to save the plugin settings from the plugin window frame's upper left corner. Give it a distinctive name. Then instantiate a new instance of Stylus and proceed to load the plugin setting you had just saved.
