I was searching this forum to see if anyone had made comparisons between Mach 5 and Kontact 3. I have no experience of either so I••™d be grateful for your opinion. Apparently most people here in England use Kontact but to me the interface doesn••™t look that great and my gut reaction (from what I••™ve read about it ) is to stay loyal to MOTU and get Mach 5. However, I was speaking to an audio professional the other day and he was concerned that Mach 5 won••™t be supported for much longer, because it arrived a little late in the game, and so comparatively doesn••™t have many users. I wouldn••™t know but I••™d appreciate some views on this subject.

I have the original version of Kontakt and just finished reading thru the posts here where Kontakt is compared to MachFive and the majority of the one's I read say that Ktkt is a bit deeper. [more powerful in its capabilities] They felt the sound libraries were similar enough in quality not to be an issue.
I found the version I have to be easy to use. I am not a MIDI or sound design nerd and think it's pretty easy to use as far as editing sounds goes. Much of the library doesn't need much tweaking for my purposes. You are right about motu's gui being a bit more flashy or engaging. But since I already have the original version the upgrade is only 149.00 to me l... plus the guys on this list who have both, saying there's more bang for the buk ,so to speak, I ordered Ktkt 3 today. I didn't know about the longevity issue. That could be rumor.

i used M5 when it first came out and then let it go when ver 2 never materizlized. I went to K3 and have spent a lot of time trying to get it to go in the past few days. It is TOO deep! I will use it for NI files, but am purchasing Mt ver 2 to use in DP---seems to make more sense to me.......

I have hundreds of sfx presets in M5 v1. After Motu fell off the face of the earth for 2.5 years for M5 V2, I started working with K2. I finally got M5 V2 when it came out. It looks great and the feature set is nice but it takes a while to figure out how to save presets if you are used to the old M5. I would work in a way were I could open up a sfx preset, duplicate on of the presets many samples, dsp or change that sample's start time and then resave the preset as something new. This process was pretty straight ahead. In M5 2 I had nothing but confusion and weirdness in how it handled that task. If that weren't bad enough, it crashed on me alot as well as another one of my guy's systems so I stopped using it until I can spend a few hours relearning my workflow on it. It is very powerful and a great upgrade to V1 but I've had nothing but frustration with it so far. My guess is many people here love it.
for what it's worth...
