Hi there

Any info about the release date for MOTU's symphonic instrument? Any info at all about symphonic instrument? MOTU seems not very interested in big public ...

I saw and heard a demo of it at NAMM but with all the noise it was difficult to judge it's quality. Plus, the sounds all seemed to have quite a bit of reverb.

As with a lot of companies, who knows when it will be released? It just will. MotU doesn't produce junk. Hopefully, this will also be a good usable product.

Have you seen this link at Sweetwater Sound Selling the Symphonic Instrument? No word of it at the MOTU website!

Yeah, that‘s really strange with Motu ...,
to my surprise I stumbled over a DEMO:

http://www.univers-sons.com/us2K/exec/product?prod=SYMPHONIC

It‘s a french site, you‘ll find the demos under
" Ecouter " (scroll down left side).

Very promising to my ears.
Beats any Garritans and WSLOs.
And the price: 300 •‚¬ which should be about 250 $. Bargain for an 8 GB library.

From the Sweetwater site, a review (very brief review, that is):

Great sounding orchestra! by Anonymous - Portland, OR, June 2005
This is a gem. For those that have heard GOS you will never pick it up again. This make GOS sound like a toy. Highly rec.

I assume he's talking about Garritan Orchestral Strings. It costs $599.97 at Sweetwater, vs. $279.97 for the MOTU Symphonic Instrument. Of course, for the Symphonic Instrument you have to have MachFive or some other VI that will run it. Sounds interesting. Oboy... now I've got to consider getting another computer so I can run a full suite of VIs. Geez.

Hello,
The MOTU Symphonic Instrument (MSI) is a Virtual Instrument.

Although these sounds can be loaded into MachFive, owning
MachFive is not a requirement.

Cheers.

Yes, it‘s a completely independent Virtual Instrument,
but you can mangle the sounds within machfive too of course.

And - there‘s a convolution reverb included !

I like the layout of the GUI, simple and clear.
But there is one big draw back.
Take a close look at the picture you get with the link above and you will understand:

The Amplifier Envelopes.

In God‘s name, why oh why did you do them as knobs and not as faders,
as you did with the Filter Envelopes, Motu ?

I have to see what‘s going on with the ADSR‘s at a glance.
This is impossible the way you implemented them and even more horrible:
I have to read these knobs the wrong way round: RSDA !

This is not at all intuitive Motu !
This will drive me crazy !

I understand the intention of the designer,
the knobs around the big red eye make up for beautiful graphics ...

In any other aspects the layout is easy on the eyes: Perfect.

Sound: Listen to the demos ...
Without question the best right now.
I work with a mixture of Vienna, Miroslav, Sonic Implants and Giga.
It will be a pleasure to work with the Symphonic Instrument.

I loved the piano in those demos. Very warm, rich sound. In fact, I'm fairly impressed with the library. It's definitely on my list of things to buy if they ever become available! (Hey, I talked to Magic Dave, and he says it's positively going to be available "soon." :D )
