DP5 as Rewire Slave

Is it possible to make DP5 a rewire slave and bring audio and MIDI into Protools (HD) thereby running them both simultaneously?

This was suggested to me recently and I thought it might actually be cool.
I'd like to use some of the MAS plug ins and keep DP away from DAE altogether. I have not been using DP because of the instability with PT.
I am about to do some scoring and I'd like to return to DP. Anyone tried this?

DP can not be a ReWire slave, only a host. The same goes for Pro Tools.

It's true about DP & PT only being Re-Wire hosts, but re-wire probably wouldn't work for you anyway if you're wanting to use plug-ins as it can only send audio in one direction (from slave to host).

I often run PT & DP on separate computers linked via ADAT light-pipe and MIDI, and it Works great. You have to calculate the latency and compensate for it, but that's pretty quick and easy to calibrate and, as long as you keep the buffer settings the same, it won't change from project to project.

FWIW, In my experience, Pro Tools seems to be better at chasing MIDI Time Code. Don't know why, but it seems to work better as the slave than DP.

Have you tried soundflower? It is free..

It basically acts as a dummy 16 channel sound card so you can use it to route audio from one app to another. As DP supports multiple sound cards you should be able to do use another app (with soundflower as its audio device) as an effects send.
