Hi guys,

I'm depressed! I bought my Motu 828 in North America, but i plugged it into a socket in Hong Kong without switching the 110~220 switch and i heard a hum, then no response.

I smell a slight faint of smoke, so i can only assume that it is fried.

Motu 828 not registered, bought it a few years ago so its definately pass the 90 day guarantee now.

Tried calling the distributor in Hong Kong and he claimed he is not responsible for fixing it. I can't even get him to find out if only the fuse got fried, or the entire thing is fried.

Why not just try opening the case and replacing the fuse?

thanks for the suggestion, I didnt realize that it was just the fuse blown. I just assumed that the entire unit has been blown.

In any case, according to the webpage the Motu 828 uses a 125mA fuse which i will try to look for.

Maybe i will try taking it apart and replacing the fuse myself, as the Motu distributor here says he is charging me $150 to get it replaced and one months time for the Motu to go there and back.

just one final question.

According to the link you sent me, the motu 828 (original) uses a 125mA fuse. Should i assume that this applies only to the ORIGINAL 828, and not the mkII models?

Then below, it says for "firewire interfaces", it uses a 500mA fuse.

My motu828mkii is a firewire interface. Therefore do u think i should be using a 500mA fuse? or stick to the 828 original fuse of 125mA?

Sorry for the thousand questions, i just want to make sure im replacing this with the proper one without causing even more damage.

The 828mkII is a current firewire interface in MOTU's product line (but not for long), so it needs a 500mA slow-blow fuse. When you open the case of the 828mkII, you see the fuse rating printed on the main PCB near the fuse receptacle. That will confirm the type of fuse you need.

So, did a new fuse work?

My original 828 just died, right now.

I'm wondering if the fuse worked for you, before I go to the trouble of pulling the unit from the rack, etc. But if it's the fuse, then that would be lots quicker and less hassle than dealing with a MOTU RMA.

Really sorry I didn't get back to you. That thread was from 11 years ago and for what it is worth, I can confirm that it was the fuse which was blown. Replacing it worked like a charm!

I replaced that original 828 w/ an 828 Mk II with a discount from MOTU after MOTU could not fix the original 828.
