Borrowing from the spirit of a thread James posted a while back about his Marshall rig. (I may have even plagiarized the title - sorry James)

Line 6 can take their POD and stick it, well, you know.....below is my "silent guitar recording rig". Digital emulation be damned - this is all tubes and transformers baby.....and heavy as lead! Click on the thumb for a bigger pic.

The rundown.....

An Egnater M4 tube preamp loaded with 4 modules: Fender Twin/Deluxe, Vox AC30, Marshall JTM45/Plexi and Hot Rod Marshall JCM800/900. Two 12AX7s per module.

VHT 2/50/2 2 ch. 50W tube power amp - 2 EL34s per channel. Runs Class A or Class A/B.

Palmer PDI-03 speaker simulator (for silent recording without a cab). Can simulate 2x12 or 4x12 cab with "American" or "British" style speakers.

TC Electronic G-Major for FX.

(Not Shown): Mesa Boogie 2x12 Recto cab for when I DO want to be loud and proud (translation....when the wife and kids are not home!)

Sorry for the self gratifying pimping of my gear, but I have been working on piecing this rig together for 6 months, and I wanted to share.

Oh yeah, it sounds amazing! Like have the complete history of rock guitar amps in a single amp (except for the Rectifier module which I haven't bought yet....)

OH yeah??? Well, umm welll......wweeellllll ummmm it's just a good thing I can't play a lick of guitar, or I'd show you some serious guitar playin'!!!!

I've never heard of the An Egnater M4 tube preamp before any more info on that u'd like to share.

Bruce Egnater pioneered this "modular tube amp" design - originally OEMing it for Randall - Randall has since gone on to have their own modular series of amps, but the Egnater's (IMO) sound much better and are the "original".

They also make a 50W head that has two slots for modules and looks just like a standard amp head. I went for the M4 preamp rack mount chassis because I wanted 4 modules, and because I wanted a stereo setup with the VHT 2 ch. power amp.

Great stuff. Very flexible. The closest you will get to Marshall, Vox and Fender tones without actually owning all of the actual amps.

Well, I haven't had a chance to really record much with it yet.....I have just finished with 14 months (egad!) of studio construction and gear swapping, so I am just now getting my workflow setup again. Still i haven't found anything YET that can replace my vintage Marshall combo or silver face princeton BUT i'm looking

Nice rig! I have a friend who is looking at speaker emulators, seem to do the trick at 3am.

For me, I've been recording dry but setting up an aux track in DP that has a nice sounding Guitar Rig preset that I made. I can record while monitoring through it, and all of my recorded guitar tracks route to it as well. This works well for 3am. Then, when I make a little noise, I simply reamp the guitar tracks through either my modded '77 Super Reverb or my Mesa DC3. Works like a charm.

I just sold my POD version 1 on ebay for $70 after using it for 8 years off an on (mostly off). I bought it as a B Stock in 1999, right when they came out, for $110. I basically rented it for $5/year, which is all that it's really worth, to be honest!

gearboy, I am sort of doing a similar thing. I am recording both the simulated output and the straight output from the Palmer for initial tracks when I need to be more quiet (or don't want to wear phones), then when I have some time when I can crank up the volume and mic a cab, I run the non-simulated Palmer track back through my VHT power amp and out to the cab for standard mic'ing. Works really great, because I can get several tracks recorded silently, then within a couple of hours run everything back through the cab for the real deal.

The Palmer's are nice. I have the PGA-04. It works great for cranking up my reissue
1959SLP Marshall Plexi at 3 A.M. Going with this set up, I took it one step further, and run the output of the Palmer, into the "line in" of my PodXT Pro.
I bypass the amp simulations of the Pod, and just use the cab/mic simulations, and the fx. ( delay, reverb,etc )
Man it's been working out really well...!!! The Palmer, by itself was good, but it could be a bit fizzy or buzzy. But now sending it through the Pod cab/mic simulations, things really smooth out..!! Plus the Pod has some post eq, to tame things even more, if need be.

Last but not least, everything goes into my UA-2-610. I'm starting to have a tough time telling the difference between this set up, and a mic'd cab.
