Seeking to buy an alt. brand LCD monitor

Question: can anyone suggest a good alternative LCD monitor to the Apple LCDs. This is for audio, so I don't have to have the stellar color reproduction of an Apple screen.

I have DVI and VGA connectors - ATI Radeon 9200 for Mac on my old G5.

Judging from what I've heard and read, Dell and Samsung are your next-best bets.

That's the third time I've heard "Dell" in the last 12 hours. (my friend has one for his PC)

Thanks my simian friend. I'll be looking in that direction.

Hey, no worries bOing. :D

You might want to check out which one has the better screen.
Although both are said to be a cut above the rest in terms of consistency and reliability, I'm pretty sure one of them uses the same source as Apple but with slightly less stringent buying constraints.

I found this thread to be very helpful when shopping for a new display a few weeks ago:

Thank you for that too, Chadd. I found something similar yesterday, but it looks like it was burned from this one cause it looks for more in depth.

Let me add to the Dell. I have 2 24" Dell's for my workstation. I bought them from the refurb outlet online and saved some more. Then, one of them went out and they took care of it immediately. Sent out a new one and I sent back the old one once it came.

Price, service, and now quality cant be beat. This was a year ago and I think they were $550 a piece.

Thanks Jade...

Seems that Dell has a good reputation for their screens. I'll probably make a decision tomorrow (Can't wait forever, I got me some music to make).

Just an update. Today I ordered an LG L226WTY-BF 22" LCD Monitor. LG stands for "Life's Good" - think they're a Canadian company cause I phoned them up and a polar bear answered.

Specs: 2ms, 1680 x 1050, 3000:1 CR, 300 cd/m2, D-Sub, DVI-D. It cost $275 (CDN). I'll report back once it arrives and I give it a workout.

The company where I buy my computers sells the LG brand as well as Apple (they're dumping Viewsonic - too low quality). They inspired me to consider these LG screens.

Where I finally purchased didn't have Dells or I might have bought one instead. The LG has high ratings (3000:1 contrast) so it should be pretty decent. It's probably a TN screen, not the S-IPS which I'm used to. But still, it was $750 cheaper than the first LCD I bought 8 years ago...

Thanks everyone for your input. My next purchase, when I can budget for $1200-$1500 will likely be a Dell. Or a hovercraft. :)

Bargain!

I hope it serves you well, bOing.
Can't wait to jump on the LCD train...
