How to streamline saving outboard gear settings?

Hi, I'm having a problem with finding a good mac program for setting up a template with all of my gear settings, and then being able to go back through and just edit the values. I am trying mainly to do this for remembering which cables plug into where, and what my compressor's settings are for each recording (there are an awful lot to keep track of).
Thanks in advance for anyone who can solve this problem for me.

A pencil, eraser and paper always worked for me.
I'd store said masterpieces in a clear-plastic-jacketed folder named, "Studio Setup Specs".
Fun, fun, fun.
An alternative might be graphic renderings, but I've not used drawing apps before, so I can't advise further.

i've got about a dozen outboard units to log each mix and so far the best I've come up with is a printed form (using draw in Word) showing the faceplates of the gear and making hash marks or writing numbers in the appropriate areas.
I'd love a faster solution with less physical storage needed.
I tried Digital photos but that was too much work to achieve useable results.
If it's a very simple session with just 1 or two reverb settings I'll just render the verbs and write the settings in the comments field.
