424, dual 2.5 G5, DP5.13 (or 4.61) kernel panics/lock ups
Alright, so i had the world most stable set up when i was at 10.4.8. I updated to 10.4.11 (kind of by accident) and now i have pretty regular, yet inconsistent lock ups, fan roaring kernel panics, and the occasional "you must restart..." grey screen. I took the 424 out and the computer seems to be running stable. I ran memtest, moved the 424 to another slot, yadda and no luck. Any thoughts? I would hate to think that i need to downgrade my OS....
Oh, and DP didn't need to be open or running.
Happy New year, BTW!!!!

What versions of audio drivers are you running?oldguitars wrote:Alright, so i had the world most stable set up when i was at 10.4.8. This sounds like a driver issue to me.

So it will go into a kernal panic doing nothing whatsoever??
That is really wierd.
If that is really the case, then I'd suspect a botched OS upgrade somehow or perhaps it's a hardware issue that is coincidental. Stranger things have happened. In any case it doesn't appear DP or audio related so perhaps a MacOs/Apple hardware forum would be more helpful.

This is an excellent page:
Resolving Kernel Panics
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
REALLY - you will get a lot out of this.
At anyrate, of the times I have had trouble with kernel panics, here is what they were:
One time a stick of RAM had gone bad (it happens)
One time, the internal IDE cable had a hole it in and was bad.
One time, my boot drive was on the verge of failure.
One time, the cache on one of my CPU's had gone bad.
One time, the M-audio installer messed up my permissions.
--
So in the majority of cases, they were caused by a hardware failure. So I doubt that it is the 10.4.11 upgrade, unless say the permissions got screwed up or the install was screwed up because of a glitch in the download. But I have never heard of that happening. (although I usually don't allow software update to upgrade my system -- I usually download the updaters for the system myself as I have heard on the internets that there can sometimes be problems with the automatic upgrades).
So I am betting on hardware. Can't hurt to run a permissions repair though and make sure you have the latest motu audio drivers.
--
Best of luck.

Not to put new things into the fold, but I deleted a PACE driver the other day, and got a kernal panic upon next boot
That sucker was on the HD for a while, and OSX (10.3.9) did not like it.
After the 2nd boot, and repaired permissions, it settled down. I was almost to the point of booting to the CD to repair, but was not needed.
Not to instill any drama, but kernal panics are a drama

This seems to suggest that you did the update through Software Update, which is not a good idea for system software. If this is the case, go to Apple Downloads and get the Combo Updater named MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.11PPC.dmg. Run the installer and see if it solves your problems.oldguitars wrote:I updated to 10.4.11 (kind of by accident) and now i have pretty regular, yet inconsistent lock ups, fan roaring kernel panics, and the occasional "you must restart..." grey screen.
I started in OS X with 10.3.3 and I'm now at 10.4.11. I've installed every system point update using the downloadable Combo updater and I've never once had a single problem. This procedure is recommended by MacFixit and other Mac websites.
Kind regards.
