Preventing Error 103

I just got an error=103 message when trying to open a project I've been working on. It's a project with a several instances of VSL and a bunch of MIDI feeding VSL. After some searching here and trying a couple things it seems my file is corrupted. That really hurt because I lost many hours of work. I'll have to start over again but I'd like to make sure this doesn't happen to me again.
From my reading, it seems like large amount of MIDI data normally cause this type of file corruption and a couple people suggested using a separate MIDI interface. I'm not sure how that would help much because all my MIDI was being used internally - nothing left my computer.
Is there something I should be aware of to keep this from happening again?
