Beach balls with the 424?

Post by terencepalmer »

Well, I've got a problem I can't seem to fix. I've sort of narrowed it down to either the 424 or the 24i/o, but it doesn't make sense to me, so I'm hoping someone will point out some overlooked/obvious issue before I start looking at replacing the hardware. My setup is a G5 1.8ghz, 4gb ram, Motu 424/24i/o, DP 5.13 and Leopard 10.5.1.

The problem seems to be that the computer beach balls very often when doing any editing: moving MIDI notes, tuning vocals, cutting audio soundbytes, moving edges, etc. sometimes even just hitting play will cause a beach ball. And it's a big one. The whole system locks up for a few seconds. If I'm running activity monitor, it also locks up, so I can't see what is going on for those few seconds. But otherwise I can't switch projects or windows or anything until it resolves and then mostly it's fine until the next time. Sometimes it's happening every 3 moves, which is quite annoying.

As I remember it, it started sometime after, but not directly after, installing 4.6. While all of you guys were raving about the stability, I've been pulling my hair out trying to get to the bottom of this. I've anxiously awaited each update, and even jumped early into Leopard hoping it would solve the issue, but it hasn't.

I've done everything I can think of: repairing permissions, trashing preferences, trashing the iSight plugin, clean installs of both OS X and DP, updating audio drivers, etc.

Switching the hardware from the 424 to built in audio causes the problem to go away, but of course is unusable.

The anomaly is that at one point, I tried deleting the ins and outs from the bundles window and that seemed to solve the problem, but now it is back worse than ever and that doesn't do anything anymore.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Terry
