EWQLSO audio glitches - help!

I have a dual 2.5 G5, 4 gigs RAM, DP 4.52, OS 4.3.9.
I'm trying to compose using six instantiations of the East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Gold, which have been pre-loaded with my 48 favorite instrument patches from that library. What I really want to do is compose without freezing tracks, but I can't even play ten tracks at once without red-lining the CPU meter in the Audio Performance window and audio dropouts/glitches.
I've downloaded all the latest updates and drivers from East West and Native Instruments. I've tried many combinations in the Kompakt instrument's DFD setting. The thing that seems strangest to me is settings that use up less RAM rather than more have less glitching and red lining. And if I turn DFD right off, when the song file attempts to load Digital Performer shuts down without warning around about the time 3 of my 4 gigs of RAM have been used, is never able to finish loading the file.
Any suggestions? Has anyone out there been able to do what I'm trying to do here?
Thanks,
