Beep-Beep

Does anyone know why I hear a very faint, constant beeping sound coming from my speakers. I thought at first it was my untralite but even when I have all my MOTU interfaces turned off I keep hearing a beeping. I am using a Mackie big knob changing the gain on the big knob does not change the volume of the beep but if I turn the big knob off it stops. I tried going directly from the ultralite to my Mackie HR824 speakers the beeping is still there.
any ideas?

Do you have any demo plugins running? Sometimes, demo versions of plugins will place beeps intermittently to prevent people from actually mixing with them before they are paid for.

The only other thing I could suggest is to first isolate the audio channel/track through which the beeps are heard. Then, isolate the specific device sending signal on that channel or track which is generating the beeps by disabling one device or plugin at a time.

If it's hardware, perhaps some sort of hardware reset is in order. Perhaps a driver, if available, might need to be reinstalled or updated.

Thanks for responding so quickly..
The beep is there all the time even when I have nothing at all running, nothing open. If the G5 is on and I have any audio output hooked up its there. Even if I turn off the ultralite... beep-beep. Turn off MOTU Audio Setup...Beep-Beep.

I remember reading about this beeping problem when the G5s first came out. But I can't remember what the solution was (sorry). And I never bought a G5 myself.

EDIT: I just Googled "G5 beeping" and found this:

Kind regards.

If you mean is it coming from the built-in mac speaker, yes but the fan noise almost covers the beeping. You really have to put you ear right on the computer to hear it...very strange
It is more noticeable with external speakers hooked up.

Yeah my G5 dual 1.8 make this beeping too (the first example of acoustic noise n the article linked above).

I've learned to live with it ...... at least it's better than my old G4 which sounded like a tractor engine.

Oh Yeah, I changed the Processor Performance from high to reduced and that pretty much did it. It is still there but much lower.
Thank You.
Is there a downside to running DP5 with this reduced setting?

There might be on busy projects. If the CPU is in self-preservation mode it could place its own conservation above cycles needed by DP. That's not to say that it *will* be a problem, but if it is a problem you could always experiment with another setting such as Automatic.

Good sleuthing on the power supply doc, btw!
