3 * 8pre daisy chain setup (urgent)

Post by andivienna »

hi, so finally i have 3 pieces of 8 pre,
daisy chained on one FW into my macbook pro 2.16GHz.
I installed one of the drivers.

All three interfaces are recognised by the audio-MIDI setup.

My Questions are:
1) How can i make my audio program (Logic) recognise all inputs.
So far i can select each of the 3 single interfaces, but not all.

2) I solved it by creating a new virtual device in the audio MIDI setup which consists of all 3 8pre's. Is that the right way??? by doing this i have to select one of them for the master clock.. (any preference, eg the first or the last conected to the computer?)

3) Clock.. is there a way to sync them all?? Is there any danger that they run out of sync if they are connected on one FW Bus?

4) Anything else i should know??

If possible i like to test the setup today with a band, so would appreciate urgent reply... Thanks very much!!

Go to audio/MIDI setup and make sure each individual unit has matching sampling rates.

Create a new aggregate device (put the clock source to the 8pre highest up on you rack shelf, so that its first input is logic's input 1 as well, makes things easier... you can't sync them all, daisy chaining them makes them 1 unit)

Set audio in/out in audio/MIDI setup to aggregate (make sure you've set up aggregate properly by counting the inputs available, there should be 48, i think)

Startup Logic, in 'audio' tab set aggregate device as input device.. providing the aggregate was built properly you should have 48 (or whatever the number is) in's. Keep in mind the optical outs count as inputs so do the math to figure out what input in logic the 1st physical input of the second 8pre would be (its not gonna be 9)

I have a similar setup, but different problem...

Anytime I go into the aggregate device, set everything up, click done, and then exit the Audio/MIDI setup, the aggregate device disappears.

Any thoughts?

Running a brand new Imac with Leopard 10.5.1.

Not sure if this helps, but in DP I've got to shift-click to select multiple MOTU interfaces in the audio setup menu. It sees all of them but I've got to highlight all of them by shift-clicking.

That may or may not help.
