Hello to Frodo and others,

After having switched from a G4 Mac running OS 10.2.8 to a MacPro running OS 10.4.10, I became unable to view Quicktime Movies on YouTube. A portion of my screen displays a Q with a question mark in it. A message reads "... you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player."

I have installed Quicktime Player Version 7.2.0 and Version 9 of Flash Player specifically for Universal Binary, and have made sure Javascript is enabled in Explorer, Safari, Netscape and Firefox web browsers.

Is anyone else aware of this condition? Might you have some insight as to a workaround? Would purchasing Quicktime Pro help? Thanking all in advance.

Hello All,

Before anyone asks, the answer is "... no, I do not have the trojan horse in my computer." Nor have I attempted to download any codec files from any unsavory sites.

The Macworld article, referred from another thread, mentions the presence of a file called plugins.settings in the Library as a symptom of the trojan. This library does not exist in my 'puter.

Quicktime in YouTube (looking up Glenn Gould, btw) has not worked from day one of owning the MacPro.

You get the same response in all the browsers? Are any Flash presentations playing (like the MachFive one at the top of the MOTU site?)

You are trying to watch *Flash* content, not Quicktime content on Youtube:

We've noted this problem several times in the past. It has to do with a conflict between QuickTime Player attempting to playback Flash content, and Adobe's own Flash plug-in attempting to playback the same content. Apple's QuickTime has the ability to play Flash content embedded in QuickTime movies and in Web pages via the QuickTime plug-in but this option turned off by default, as it is not compatible with as many embedded Flash media types as the true Adobe plug-in. However, it may be inadvertently turned back on .

The fix is generally to open the QuickTime pane in System Preferences, click on the Advanced tab, then click the MIME button and deselect "Flash" under "Miscellaneous File Formats." However, this option has been removed in Leopard. As such, the preference must be changed by manually modifying the file ~/Library/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist (this refers to the Library folder inside your user folder).

This fix was first posted to the Apple Discussion Boards by Andrea Turriziani, and is adapted below:

(Note: Before going through the process below, try simply deleting the file ~/Library/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist then restarting your browser).

If you have Apple's Developer Tools installed, use this process:

Open the folder ~/Library/Preferences
Control-click (or right-click) the file com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist and open it with Property Lit Editor
Click on the triangle near "root"
Click on the triangle near "WebPluginMIMETypes"
Click on the triangle near "application/x-shockwave-flash"
In "WebPluginTypeEnabled" change the Value from "Yes" to "No"
Save and close Property List Editor
Relaunch Safari
If you don't have the Developer Tools installed, you can perform the same process with the shareware tool PlistEditPro (just open com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist with PlistEditPro instead of Property List Editor in step 2).

That is what worked for me after problems arose using 10.5.

Thank you very much for your prompt and clearly written help allowing me to view Quicktime movies. I am watching Glenn Gould perform a snippet from Bach's Partita #2 in C minor as I write.

I've not been able to play any flavour of video in iTunes for at least 6 months.

I did run the "Mr. Stinky" screensaver around the time video died.
That reminds me - if video killed the radio star, who killed video?
