Optical out on G5 revisited?

I've searched both Unicornation and Motumac for queries on this issue and am suprised to find no answers. Does the optical i/o deliver 24 bit spdif comparable to pro gear? Is there some way to use it and 828mk2 together in DP? Is it possible (and where can one find it) to get a cable that will go from the g5 optical i/o to AES (XLR)? Already asked this at motumac with no replies:

1. I don't know but if it's spec'd at 24 bit then yes.
2. I doubt it. DP likes one audio interface at a time normally.
3. Definitely not. They are completely different protocols- optical is passing light and AES is passing electrons. There are little converter boxes that will do this though. If you can't find one you might try Markertek.
HTH ...a little

You can use multiple i/o's with DP by option clicking in the choose hardware window. I use mlan and 828mk2 but would like to add the spdif from my G5. I suspect that because its part of the mac internal audio that you can't combine it with an external device but I don't know for sure. Anybody?

Well , when I do choose both the Mac spdif and my RME adat interface , I got crackle noise and I suspect it is du to lack of sync between th spdif and the adat or it has to do vith the buffer setting ...
I do not know for sure ...
