loud DING with TOAST!

Man I hate it when Toast is finished writing a disc and the dang DING blasts out so loud.
I have adjusted the level of sounds in the Apple sounds window and it does not change it. Any ideas? I am using just one MOTU 828 MK2 audio interface.

Gotta love 4.6!

Dual 2.0 G5, 3.5 ram OSX 10.3.5
Thanks Dan

Yeah, that sucks, and it's always bugged me. They ought to include a preference to turn that off. I just make sure the volume is turned down to my monitors before starting a burn.

Try sending system sounds out of the internal speakers- basically the Sound pref panel could be set to ignore the interface. This won't disturb the way DP accesses the interface directly

Another workaround is to simply mute Mac internal audio when burning.

I've used ResEdit in OS9 to delete the beep. I haven't bothered with OSX yet, but I imagine it's a fairly similar process.

That damn ping in toast went off full blast in the studio once after tracking drums. The drummer was inches away from the 3 way drum monitors that were powered by a 5000 watt PA amp rack. Now every-time I see that drummer he reminds me of how I tried to kill his hearing with toast. Seriously he went deaf for like 5 minutes, Not cool at all. BTW I spent hours looking for a way to turn it off, with no luck.

Oh come on!!

serious studio practice means that you never leave a potential loud source open close to your monitors. You cannot blame the OS or your Mac for that.

This is the main reason that I invested in a monitor controller when I first invested in a sound card (2408)

It is important not to rely on software to dim or mute the sound source. What if you get a digital freeze with full digital noise..... it will fry your tweeters at the least.....

Good studio practice is to make sure that you leave monitors and headphones dimmed or muted when not in use.

I don't mean to preach, but it will save your gear, and ensure you are not in danger of being sued by your clients!!!

take care!!!

BTW, I have been guilty of nearly deafening a client, and frying the tweeters on two sets of NS10s, by not muting monitors before shutting down the system......... many years ago now.... before Macs no less,,,,

Its a lesson learned, I couldn't agree more about muting your monitors. Trust me that hasn't happened since.

I always wanted to replace it with a sample of a toaster popping up toast.

Hi I'm new here,
Maybe some ears and speakers could use this info :)
I had the same issue with Toast until I found out about the application call Resorcerer. Like ResEdit but not free :-( I was able to replace the famous bell with a silence.
So here's the steps from Resorcerer
1. open Toast/Contents/Resources/Toast Titanium.rsrc
2. On the left side, look for 'snd' and select it
3. On the right, double click 128 "Toast Signature Sound"
4. Click 'record' and press 'rec' & 'stop' quickly to print a silence.
5. Save all and voilà.

I hope it help!

Easy answer and you'll use it way more than you might think:

Buy Detour - $12 shareware. EXTREMELY USEFUL (will not affect DP and you cannot alter DP's audio out with Detour).

Same here always an unpleasant surprise at the end of a disk burn. If I am aware of the pending ding I occasionally attempt to time it just right with a high C on my piano when I sense the Toast sound is just about to occur. yea!!!

Now that the lectures positing the hypothesis that we all should be perfect and never forget for a moment to mute our speakers and headphones have subsided, the earlier point about Roxio's insufferable arrogance in refusing to provide an easily-implemented option to turn the damned sound off is perfectly valid.

And thanks very much to ledhead and MIDI life crisis for actual solutions to the Roxio Plague.

I suspect Roxio has a collusion with Southwest Airline. :D
