MotorMix

I just bought the MotorMix. I am new to the whole control surface thing and thought this would be the end of mousing around. So far not impressed.

Does anyone use this unit with DP4.12? What is your experience.
Are other control surfaces better to work with (Mackie Control, SAC 2.2)?

I e-mailed CM Labs, and they told me they are working on a dedicated driver for DP 4.5. Hpoe this makes things better.

Using the Behringer BCF2000 as Baby-HUI emulation mode with DP4.5 and it works pretty well. Especially considering its incredible low price.

Thanks,

I just bought one too. I played with it for 5 min. on DP 3.1.1 (it uses Protools mode not HUI.)
I started to like it, but then the left "view" switch got stuck, and that was it.
CM Labs told me it's probably caused by paint stuck to the switch.

It's been a week now I haven't got it back yet.

Once it's back I should be in OS X and DP 4.5.1.
I'll let you know how I like it.

Since I moved up to OS X & DP 4.5.2, I couldn't find a way to make it work right.
I sent a couple e mails to CM Labs, but got no answer.

Has anybody set it up to make it works and care to shed some light?

Thank you

OS 10.3.9 , DP4.5.2, 2408 mk3

That dumb unit didn;t work for me either..it could not over write data..it needed a space in the data for it to "take hold" and start to over right...otherwise...the faders fought without recording til there was a space in the controller 7 data....stupid!..useless....
At the time, Behringer agreed with me after many tech support calls that there was no fix, that a software update would be needed etc. I took the dang thing back!

I should have read this a year ago..... :(

I bought one, and can't get it to work well with DP 4.6.1/ OS 10.4.5.

I'm using MOTU's HUI driver, Motormix in ProTools mode, as CM recommends for DP 4.x. Enough of the functions work to make me happy BUT.... it keeps losing communication with DP (display remains lit, but blank, nothing functions, no sign of MIDI out).

I also use it with PT LE (6.9.2) and Digi's Motormix driver, and this never happens - seems to be strictly a DP/Motormix issue.

I am going to email CM Labs about it, but haven't had much response to questions in the past, so I'm not optimistic!

motormix update....

I have to retract some of what I just wrote - it turns out that the problem I had was with the Motormix's power supply, and nothing to do with DP.

I jumped to the wrong conclusion because, by coincidence, the problem started to appear when I switched from doing Pro Tools projects (Motormix working fine) to DP projects (Motormix not working). But I later realized it was not working properly with anything anymore!

For those looking for info about Motormix and DP 4.6.1: until this problem with my unit manifested itself, it was working fine, using MOTU's HUI driver.

Some of the ultra-slick Pro Tools functions do not work under this driver, but the essential functions (faders and pans, and some automation and transport switches) do.

Sorry for crying wolf earlier!

I still think the motor mix is a piece of poop. I got one several years ago, and the company never supported it or provided the right drivers.... Yea, the Tascam's pretty amazing for the money.

I second the poop comment. Had one. Hated it. Never worked well and the feel was very bad.

It definitely comes with all the quirks of a small company; tech support communication is either silent or fabulous - with not much in between. (I've experienced both). And development of their own driver seems to be at a standstill.

But the PT driver works very well in PT 6.9 , and it also functions reasonably well for me in DP 4.6.1 with MOTU's HUI driver (all the basics, but none of the extras).

For many situations, I do think Mackie Control is probably a better choice, but I needed something inexpensive (used), very compact, 100 mm moving faders, and a lot more robust (and quieter) than that silly Behringer thing (ugh!)

Now that the power supply issue is under control, I'm very happy with it again - but as always, YMMV!

This post was more than a year ago, a month after that I sold mine on eBay.
Got a good price. It's really too bad that CM Labs don't want to write the driver for DP. :x

Yeah, when I was using it, I was mixing an album project. It was always slow and clumsly, the automation would just seems to fight you. It would just saturate the MIDI channel it was on, eventually cause communication errors and began to cause DP to drag. What a drag.

i bought the motor mix when it first came out and it never worked very well but just kept it around in hopes that new drivers would be available for DP...its been five years and nothing... its laid out badly and kind of hard to operate..its a piece of crap!!! i would really like an answer as to when or ever they plan to make it work properly in DP.......it was a waste of 900 dollars...would love to take it to CMlabs in a box...smashed to pieces :(
