Longtime DP'er here. My G5 just died (failed logic board), I have albums to mix for two progressive, artistic bands, and we're all basically broke at this point.

I'm hoping someone in the L.A area has outgrown their G5 (Dual 1.8, 2.0 or better) and would be willing to "contribute to the cause" by selling to me at slightly less than market value, or through some barter arrangement. I can spend $800 (by pooling resources from bands and friends). I don't necessarily need a lot of RAM or HD, since I can cannibalize from my G5's carcass. Slots must be PCI or PCI-X (not PCIe).

No shipping scenarios, please, as I would want to be able to test drive your G5 before taking it home. Thanks for thinking about it.

BTW, your avatar trips my number one pet peeve: monkeys and chimps have less in common than do humans and chimps, DNA-wise, yet people often lump them together. Maybe it's some kind of universal, species-wide denial that we homo sapiens have.

I think most of us know that. The "accuracy in avatars" law hasn't really passed in the UnicorNation yet. I believe it's still tied up in committee.

DNA similarities aren't what they seem.
I'm breeding Brachydanio Rerio, a 1.5" minnow native to India.
It is 95% similar to humans, DNA wise. It's a tiny fish, for goodness' sake!
Further, different DNA is used to produce the same body parts in different animals.

In fact, if we were to assess the entire animal and plant kingdoms in this way, we'd be astounded as even the number of genes is all over the place.
Many plants are more complex than animals, for instance.
Also, so-called timelines of development involve major ups and downs in gene counts, something that's difficult to explain in evolutionary, or indeed any terms.

Your pet peeve has for almost 40 years been my passion, one could say.
Better stop before someone reminds me of how politically incorrect I am.

If the DNA argument doesn't ring your bell, maybe you could swing with the evolutionary tree. Oops, no prehensile tail.

UPDATE: An Apple Genius made a rapid diagnosis that the logic board was bad. Too rapid, in my view -- it was like hearing an auto mechanic say, "Hmm, looks like there's something wrong with your engine. We'll have to replace the whole thing." A real genius would have had a voltmeter and service bulletin and would have found that one bad microchip in a minute. Grrr. [Shaking fist at Apple.]

Given the sort of voodoo attendant to the G5's power management functions, I still hold out a 2% hope that I can revive it.

In the meantime, I found a Dual 1.8GHz machine for $900 -- less than the $1100 Apple wants to replace a logic board. I'll keep playing with the Dual 2.0, but now I can be leisurely about it.

Funny, one of the bands whose albums I'm mixing came up with the funds for the replacement -- and promptly got one of their songs (one I mixed) licensed for TV for the exact same amount of $$.

So here in this little tale you've got both yer leisurely voodoo and yer instant karma.
