DP 5.12 & Ensemble or MOTU 896 HD

Post by waxman »

any one using an Apogee Ensemble with DP 5.12?

Does the ensemble sound better then an MOTU 896 HD?

Thanks man I have been reading all that logic and Apple stuff until I am seeing gray...

I really am looking for some real experience. Do you know if the Rosetta is the same sound as the X series stuff? Is it like MOTU stuff? Everything sounds different. 896-892-24io. they all sound different...

Should Ijust run the Rosetta or ensemble alone or is the key for low latency the PCIe card?

I really appreciate any hands on input on this one...

I have no experience in this hardware what so ever, but when I read about these rigs now a few hours ago, my heart started to pound hard, and I am now thinking about how to present the alternative use of the tax return money..

I got the Apogee Symphony card set up with the Rosetta 800 a few months ago when I upgraded to a Mac Pro. I was using the 896HD with a G5 (which I still have as a VI slave). I love the Apogee, I think it slays the prior set up. Of course this is all subjective, I haven't done any A/B tests and I don't do a ton of live tracking - I'm a composer not an engineer. Everything just seems to me to sound...clearer.

The Ensemble is the firewire version, right? My experiences led me to go with the Symphony PCIe card. It's more expensive but you don't have to worry about the firewire bandwidth issues (fw 800 slowing down to 400 if there's another fw port used). I haven't had any sluggishness and I've got all the PCIe slots full - Apogee, UAD, eSATA card.

The upgrade process was excruciating (and still is!), but the Apogee stuff is great and was never a problem, and the tech guys over there are very accessible if you have ?'s.

Cheers,

D

Thanks that is great. Would you consider the ensemble as good if you were giving it it's own firewire card?

What do you mean by "excruciating?"

The Apogee part or the intel mac part.

I'm sure the Ensemble would be fine if you did that, but I just figured there's always going to be something you'll want the firewire ports for (I use them now to stream video) and I wanted the audio to be on its own path. It may not matter anymore, considering how fast the mac pro is, but the frustrations I had recording audio while trying to run a bunch of VI's on the G5 with the 896 and firewire lead me to choose PCI this time.

"Excruciating" was the mac intel part. Getting all the software to work together was such a pain in the ass that I would have waited longer if I had to do it again. Basically I just got too many different things at one time. When I had problems I never really knew what was causing it. The new East West PLAY software still doesn't work, for example (very disappointing). But I've learned and 10 years from now when I have money again my next upgrade will be smoooooth!
