Independent Study in Recording
Hi all. I am taking an independent study with Mark Rubel this semester and have been told that what we cover is mostly up to me. Currently, I know my way around DP pretty well and know how to use almost all the equipment the school has, so I figured I'd ask you guys and see what all you thought would be good things to cover with Mark. One thing I know I will try to cover is electronics (seeing as I have no soldering experience, I'm sure he'll be able to teach me at least one or two things on that topic). Be as general or as specific as you like.

Hi Aitikin, to best help you.... what kind of setup are wanting to learn for. If your using lots of outboard stuff, large mixers of varying varities, learn as much about electronics ... specifically signal flow, basic idea of how to read a schematic diagram. Really need to know what you're looking to do though... I'll stop now lol

It's fine Rob. I'm looking to learn as much as I can. I, over time, intend on owning my own recording studio and having that as my primary source of income. I'm just kinda trying to figure out where I should start, most of what I've learned at this point in time is just how to get a standard stereo pair recording from the mics to DP to CD and everything generally involved in that. I know how the mics work (mostly), know how the softwre works (kind of), and know how to rewire the entire studio here. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Aitikin, if your planning to record full band stuff, then I'd have to suggest learning as much about getting good drum sound, as that's usually the toughest thing to get right in a rock/pop/country recording. Theory wise though he won't be able to teach you a lot, you need to setup a drum kit, mics, and start experimenting. Mic position cannot be overstated. Perhaps he could get you going with that. Also, learn about delays.... how modulation effects delays. With a proper delay unit, you can double, flange, phase, chorus if you know how this works. I'd also recommend a business course, if you're planning on doing this as a primary source of income. Tough to say what's most useful to you... but that's a start!
