Traveler: Recording SPDIF In while using SPDIF out??

Post by technoticmedia »

Hi,

I've got a Traveler hooked up to my Mac Pro as the main sound interface for the computer. Currently I have SPDIF out hooked up to a pair of JBL LSR4328P studio monitors. I also have a loop from optical out to optical in so that I can monitor my sound output on the front of the traveler. That works fine. Yay.

Now I've got my DJ rig, which is two turntables and a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer. The mixer has a digital output (coax) and it is selectable at 48kHz or 96kHz. I tried to connect a cable between the digital ouput of my mixer to my traveler, with hopes that I would be able to record my DJ mixes in AudioDesk for output to CD.

However, I'm not able to get any sound at all, and I don't even see SPDIF In as one of the choices in CueMix. Am I missing something here? I mean if I'm not able to get this to work, I suppose I can use the main outs 1/4 and input them into the traveler that way, but its not really something I wanted to do, since I have the digital output on the DJ mixer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Well, it looks like the output level on the DJ mixer controls the output level on the digital output also, so if I crank that so that my output is way into the red on the DJ mixer, I get decent output on the motu, but it still seems to quiet IMO :(

I may just have to bite the bullet and deal with analog input off the record RCA outputs...

UPDATE- I just spoke with pioneer (I have a pioneer DJM-800 mixer for my dj equipment) and he mentioned that the output level of the digital out is line level and might need an amplifier to raise the level of it. Does the traveler have that built in?

Hi, i read your post, but it seems weird what you're saying about the line level of the SPDIF. Normally you won't have to put an amp there, since it's a standard and should connect without problems to any device with a SPDIF. The volume of it on your pioneer might affect the input on the traveler though.
