I just bought a MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory) and I‘m running DP 4.61 on it, but several times since I‘ve had sessions open, it unexpectedly quits on me. Is this a common problem with DP 4.61. Would an upgrade to DP 4.5 be worth it?

Yeah. Gotta have the Universal Binary on the Intel machines.

Thanks. I updgraded to DP 5.12, but now it can‘t find Ivory, Atmosphere, Altiverb and MachFive. What can I do to use these plugins in the new version?

Delete your Audio Unit Info Cache found in you User Library>Preferences> Digital Performer folder. Restart DP for a rescan.
If that doesn't do it, make sure you have the latest versions for your plugins and that they are indeed Intel-compatible.
You'll need Ivory 1.5 or later (current: 1.63), Altiverb 6.0 or later (current: 6.1), MachFive 2.0 or later (current: 2.01)...
Now, Atmosphere sounds can be played in M5v2, but the actual plug is not Intel comptible.
Check here for workarounds and caveats...

You have an intel mac. Therefore, all of your plugins need to be intel ready. Frodo gives more detail
Note that DP 5.1 and above is required for intel macs.
FWIW:

Using Plug-ins in Digital Performer 5.1
Digital Performer 5.1 is a universal binary application, meaning that it runs natively on either PowerPC or Intel Macs.
Per OSX's design all applications & any plug-ins they use must run entirely natively or non-natively. This means that with DP 5.1 you must use plug-ins that are also universal binaries or that are specific to the type of Mac you have (i.e., PowerPC plug-ins on a PowerPC Mac).
If you're running DP 5.1 on a PowerPC Mac, you can use universal binary and PowerPC-only plug-ins. You cannot use Intel-only plug-ins.
If you're running DP 5.1 on an Intel Mac, you can use universal binary and Intel-only plug-ins. You cannot use PowerPC-only plug-ins.
All of the plug-ins included with Digital Performer 5.1 are universal binaries.
