BTD too noisy - can't use it

Hi guys -

Have you had the experience of added hiss in bounced files? I'm bouncing 24/441 files and adding them to the sequence - for mixing stems of a film score.

And they're not usable. Too noisy.

So I'm having to laboriously create stems one-by-one using a pair of busses. Could create a bunch of sub-mixes I guess, but the cues are all very mix-heavy, and the parts share the effect returns. It's a real seriously complicated job to separate everything - and on one of the two cues I've done tonite DP can't manage it.

5.11, G5 Dual 2.3, 10.4.9 combo, all MOTU hardware, plenty of plug-ins but mostly Izotope Trash and the vanilla MOTU guys.

Any ideas?

You shouldn't hear any hiss on bounced-to-disk files that you don't hear during standard playback. The two should sound identical.

I'd double-check all output sources (i.e., standard tracks and auxes) for the culprit.

yeah, that's what I figured.

There is nothing being added in or out, to or from DP. The entire mix is 100% ITB.

There is no master-fader processing. There's no reverb. The active plugz are mostly things like Trash and Ring Modulator.

To my ears there is somewhere north of 6dB extra hiss on about half the tracks...none of which is audible when the mix is playing. Only on playback of bounced tracks...

Including tracks that are bounced with no effects at all.

Well, unfortunately I don't have time to troubleshoot this - I have to get all these cues done by Sunday...

I'll keep checking in in case someone has something simple.

Thanks

when you select everything before bouncing, try to hit "Play selection" You should hear EXACTLY the material you are about to bounce. There might be something you're selecting for nothing or something you're NOT selecting at all...

Yeah, tried that too dwet...

It's inconsistent which stem will get noise - I can't find a correlation with plug-ins... some of them are just comps with no plugs.

But if a stem comes up noisy it will be noisy every time I bounce it.

I made a template with 12 extra stereo busses and a bunch of extra FX and I'm now working in real-time

Are you using an external clock?

Yes.

Still, it's 100% ITB and there is no undue noise when playing the mix from the sequence - only the bounce.

I also had issues with click made by pre-rendering. By clicking "always run in real time" on the faulty plug, it went away.

Not Sure that's your problem but it might be worth trying...

I think I'm defaulting there, but it's definitely worth a look.

Thanks

Oh yeah, good thinking Dwetmaster. Seems like delay and reverb trails can sometimes get kind of "trapped in the buffer" as it were, and pop in on replay. Toggling the "real time" setting does alleviate that.
