i have ethno and i am reading the 2 files with machfive 2. what is the difference between the 2 file types?

I was hoping someone else would have answered you by now, as I don't really know. The best I can make out is that .dat is a data file, and .ufs is a UNIX File System format, but neither tells us much about the actual files. .ufs is a disk image, however, so I guess that's the major difference between the two. Both, however, appear to be umbrella files which house a finder-like file system within, but which is invisible from the outside without the app for which they were written. In other words, in the Finder, we see just an icon and a large lump of code. But Mach Five-2 can turn that into a disk image and allow you browser access to the files within. Ethno or MSI can do the same with the .dat file.

Hopefully someone will chime in with the real technical detail that we're both craving to know. Until then, we'll have to be satisfied with the fact that both are structurally able to contain large file systems in one block of code that is not penetrable by the Finder.

I am having one strange problem with the .ufs files from the new DVDs.

All is good on my G5, MachFive is behaving well, and I am able to open all the .ufs, .dat files (Ethno, MSI and Atmosphere etc) and all my old M5 sounds. Incidentally I love the new browser!!

However, on my MacBook Pro, double-clicking on the .ufs files does not open the disk image in the browser. All other formats work fine.

I have tried the .ufs files on both the internal and an external drive (which does work on the G5) and I have repaired permissions.

Any ideas why this is happening on the Intel machine? Could it be a disk speed thing? I should try again with a faster external maybe.

Otherwise I am really very happy with this MachFive upgrade, and although I am not usually that bothered about included libraries, I have found some really useful sounds already - mostly the SFX and sound design and electronic stuff!!

It is however the potential for sound manipulation that makes this program shine.

I've answered my own question here!!

It seems that to mount the disk image from these .ufs files that the iLok must still be connected. I am in the habit of removing the iLok from my MBP after DP has loaded up.

The .dat files are not affected by this. It seems that once the .ufs disk image has been mounted that then the iLok can be removed. I think!

So.... mystery solved!!

a side note***

the old launch M52 then yank the iLok trick works as you have confirmed.
i tried it a few days ago and it worked fine for me too. yay!

Ethno.dat contains the instruments, Ethno.ufs contains the loops.

ah! So .dat = MIDI playable & .ufs = audio

That is only true in the case of Ethno. .dat = old sound bank format that can only contain instrument and can't be linked to the iLok. .ufs is a new format that can store any file type (even pictures or text) and can be linked to an iLok.
