Problem copying supplied sounds DVDs

Post by woodyreed »

Anyone else having an issue copying the UEF file that is on the included library DVDs to their hard drives? So far I can only get disc 2 to go. They seem to get half way there and then I get an error message sayng there is a problem with the disc I am copying. Maybe I am doing it worng, as there is really not much in the manual other than saying to copy the disc to your drive. I am just draging the file to my desktop.

Yep, I had the same problem on DVD#1. I installed everything else, though. Monday I'll call MOTU and ask for a replacement on that disk. It was dirty and spotty, and it looked like the layers had come unseparated in spots.

I tried using Disk Utility to make a disk image of it, and I tried a back up utility named Chronosync, but in the end it was just a bad disk.

Chronosync worked on mine (same error message), and copied it 2x faster than the finder.

MOTU overnighted me a replacement disk. In fact, they sent TWO! I guess in case one didn't work. The first one I put in loaded just fine, but something interesting happened that was different from the others that came with my upgrade.

In each of the original disks, the double-layered DVD started out copying with the Finder saying "60 minutes remaining," or some large number like that. Over time, it worked down quickly to 20 minutes remaining, but the copying took about 20 to 30 minutes per disk.

This replacement disk started out saying "3 minutes remaining," and worked UP to "15 minutes", but the whole thing (7.9 GB) copied in about 8 minutes. Strange, eh? This was in the Finder, no special utilities.

I think the first batch of disks that MOTU received were poorly copied. The new batch will run at high speeds.

I don't know what 3rd world nation that smells like curry was responsible for that first batch of disks, but the replacements that MOTU sent me were not only flawless, but so much faster that I'm wondering how the first batch were prepared. The originals took 30 minutes or so to copy. The replacement took only about 8 to 10 minutes.

To add to MLC's novella, I see a scene in which the boxes have arrived at Cambridge, Mass., and the excited guys at MOTU post on the website that MachFive2 is now shipping! Order now! Then someone in the office opens a box and tries to install a disk. Doesn't work. They open another, and another, and another... same deal. Disks don't work. Suddenly, they collectively realize what has happened. All that money they were going to save by having the disks copied and packed in a country that rhymes with Pindia or Whee Wonka, or Whackistan, is suddenly evaporating as they stare at a room full of boxes of worthless disks in tens of thousands of dollars worth of printed, shrink-wrapped boxes. They decide to go through them and find the disks that will mount and copy -- a painstakingly time-consuming job -- while the shipping department gets on the phone with Wackystan and complains to a guy who keeps saying "no inglis. Diks am ok! We •••• more to yu? Ok More." And two weeks later they get another room full of worthless disks. By now they realize they have to get someone local to do it, so they're out twice the money. They cut their losses by sending them in sleeves, not the originally planned, shrink-wrapped, sleek boxes, and figure it will cost less to let the people go through them and find the bad disks, and just absorb the cost of shipping replacements.

That may also be why they sent me TWO, not one, replacement. They figured the odds of having to do it again were cut in half by tossing in another.

Just more fiction -- a chapter 2 added to MLC's novella.

;)

Every M5 upgrade / 2.0 package contain 5 DVD's (I'm guessing.. my package hasn't arrived yet).... BUT

Let's say MotU ordered 5000 copies of the DVD's= 5000 * 5 = 25000 DVD's

Let's say QC did NOT check all of them by installing all of the (cause then we would have to wait another 3 years before M5-2.0 arrived)

Let's say QC worked by letting employees @ motu that needed M5 in their daily work, install M5 from a separate pack on their machine... (Since I'm also pretty sure there aren't 5000 employees @Motu.. not all of them were checked.)

Let's say that it has worked for SOME people installing M5-2.0 here on Unicornation.

In fact, let's say that it has worked for a majority (90% - 99% ??) of the people on Unicornation.

Let's say that it's really just a minor inconvenience for the people that it happens to.

Let's say that MotU express a new DVD when it happens.

Let's not bother to make this such a big deal..... S*#t happens.

See if you can mount the disk directly from the DVD drive.

I've been doing this (as I want to copy over only the sounds that I'll use and not have a bunch of cr..er stuff I'll not use on my HD).

Anyway, I've found that the Tuba just hangs while loading, but, so far, everything else loads OK.

When I first received my 'complimentary copy', the install CD was blank. Just blank... I could have burned data to it. MOTU was very responsive and overnighted a functioning install disc. Interestingly, I had the same problem as everyone else while copying one of my sound Data DVDs, but just on my Mac Pro - it loaded fine on my MacBook Pro. After several attempts to copy to my Mac Pro, I took the disc out, wiped it off, threw salt over my shoulder, took out my amulets, and re-inserted it, and it finally copied. I do some development for Yamaha Corp., and have QCd many mass-produced discs, and you can definitely get a bad batch - however, to miss this many, AND have a blank install disc to boot is a pretty big miss! I'm sure there is some poor QC person @ MOTU going "DOH!"

VSL Orchestra No Go!

Post by bug67 »

For me, everything installed without a hitch...'till I got to disk 4, VSL Orchestra. Got about 3.5 gigs installed and then - error code 36. Called MOTU and they are shipping me another disk. 8)

Funny thing about all this is, I asked the magic 8 ball that sits on my desk if I was going to have any installation problems. "My sources say yes."
