I suspect only the Gods of MOTU know why this is the case.
My guess is that it was necessary and that we're already benefitting from its introduction.
How? I don't know, but I've learned to trust MOTU.
Dem folks know what they're doing, unlike we lowly Unicorns.

I haven't had to edit audio in a while, so I can't say why, as you say, "each track is having an overview built".
Upon opening projects, DP now displays a "reading project" window, and I thought this was what you were referring to.
You might want to check out DP's preferences regarding background processing.
You can set it to occur automatically when needed (such as when you open a track in the SE, which is what I suspect might be happening in your case), or to do it ASAP after the file's having been created.
Hope this helps, Hairy Oz.
Hang on... I'm a Hairy Ozzy too!

I've observed this happening when I use AIFF files in the project. AIFF is the only audio format that DP will import without converting to SD2. However, the penalty seems to be that you pay the "building overview" for AIFFs each time you open the project.
