I have been afraid to ask (ashamed, really).

But if I want to back up my DP project files to Cds.....Do I need to get "Toast"?
All the manuals tell me I can back up to "disc", but I'm assuming they mean another disck drive rather than a CD.....
This really is my first "proper" computer....(Sorry AtariST!!)

AAMMMMM, YES.

Toast is what I use to back up DP projects to either CDs or DVDs.

Just click the "Data" icon within the Toast window, drag the project files to the window and you're ready to go.

Toast is fine. I have used it for years, but I believe you can use the CD burning utility in ITunes to burn data CDs and DVDs. You might want to check it out.

You dont need Toast. IF you are running OSX, its built in. Plop in a blank CD, it will ask you to name it. Then it appears on the desktop. Then drag your DP project onto the CD, give it some time to copy. Then drag CD icon to trash, it will turn into a Buring icon.
then let it burn baby.
Though using Toast is a bit more friendly, and easier. but it does cost $75 or so

I purchased TOAST with Jam for a small fortune because I was told here that Jam will allow me to place track ID's at various locations within one piece of music. I bought it, and Jam does not have any provisions to do this. On the other hand, a different Unicornation member here told me all I need to do is use TOAST and simply select (0) time between songs and it will copy them seamlessly. So, I break up the soundbite into sections in dp, then I copy them into TOAST and make the time between tracks set to 0 and it works great. I was ticked at spending so much for a program that did not do what I was told it would. After looking at Jam I think it's pretty much a joke, especially for those who already have awesome editing abilities in dp.
Oh well, live and learn right?

What is an outrage is their upgrade pricing. I have Toast with Jam 5 and would need to upgrade it to have full functionality in Tiger, but they want $169 ($199 - $30 rebate) to upgrade. WHAT!!?? No thanks.

Thats nice to know I was going to buy Jam for that.I think I still need Popcorn though.

You can use itunes, I did for a while, but Toast does seem to convert and burn your mix quicker and with fewer mistakes. I got mine included with an external burner - Lacie which was something like 170 Euro. It means also I can run of copies of DVDs etc. from the PB drive into Lacie burner. Saves a lot of time if you need a few copies of you data. Bits of video in my (external)hard drive can take hours to encode and burn using only PB. Also if you record and master in 96/24 toast converts it to Cd format quicker and seemingly more reliably. It seems to sound a bit better too, but maybe that is just me.

TOAST is indeed a nice program, but it is way overpriced as far as I am concerned. I think Roxio figures people that buy Macs are willing to pay more, so they charge more.

That is partially true though.

I'm getting real confused & hungry here..

Anybody out there willing to give me a step by step with itunes (or whatever) as to how to back up my Dp session data,audio files .........onto a CD for future mixing etc /not excluding OMF. ( Like copying a floppy a'La ATari?)

My projects seem to be only 2.2mb max.......& I need to collaborate wih a pro tools guy as well as archive the multitrack files for myself.
I'm really feeling like I've" missed a few pages in the manual"..........
