MOTU Traveler - S/PDIF monitoring Volume?

Hi
I got my replacement Traveler, and it works fine. I am having trouble with monitoring using the S/PDIF outs. I am unable, it seems, to turn down the "Main Out" to get my monitors to turn down. It's like I'm getting full on volume.
Is this typical of monitoring digitally?
Does anyone here go to monitors with the S/PDIF cables?
