I have an Motu 828 8 in/out that's cutting out seemingly randomly . . . a few seconds then its okay for a minute, then it cuts out again . . .
This happens on two different PC's while playing back and recording . . .
any thoughts?
I'm thinking it could be the firewire cable

Yeah, try a new firewire cable.... if you've tried it on two different PC's, try a third. If that doesn't work and the new cable doesn't work, it's a bad unit.

if you use a wireless card you could try and disable it while using your motu interface ...

The device seems to work (playback) for a while, then random input lights will appear (no input is plugged in) and the playback freezes, anyone else experience this before.

I'm having this same problem. I have an 828 mkII, and it will cut out and blast me with a short, loud click in my headphones. I reformatted my computer, reinstalled the drivers, and it was fine for a few days. Now I'm having the same trouble again.
I do have a wireless card, but it doesn't seem to matter if it's enabled or disabled.
My display unit, like many other 828s, is out. I haven't sent it in for repair yet (I don't want to part with it!)
Since it did work for a few days after reformatting, I'm hoping it's some sort of software issue.
I tried unplugging the guy and flipping the red power source selector on the side (someone told me this would help "reset" the unit) but it didn't affect it.
Anyone have any other ideas?

FW or USB?
My NEW 828 usb keeps cutting out as well. It seems to me to be yet another driver issue, I can only run the buffer settings at 1024 but then suddenly it will lose sync and glitch, a 10second break then it runs again, this is on logic 5.5.1, yeah I know its old but it is asio compliant.

I dont know if this will help anyone but I just bought an 828mkII and I was getting exactly the same problems. I would get freezes, random noises and activity on the SPDIF channel even though there was noting plugged in.
After much muttering I found that my PC had assigned my firewire card to a MAC bridge for the newtork. As soon as I took the card out of the bridge, unchecked the TCPIP assignments and disabled the card for the network the 828 has been rock solid.

I have the same problems. Using motu 828mk 2 firewire with XP on a Toshiba Satellite A100R notebook with cubase SX 3. I've tried all sorts of suggestions on other forums, such as buying a firewire card with a Texas Instruments chipset- no good.
I get audio cut-outs, high-pitched noises, and the motu also seems to crash my pc- when it's plugged in for five/ten mins or so, pc freezes.
I think its a compatability issue with my pc, as the motu itself works fine stand-alone, and it worked fine on my old system.
I'm just looking for confirmation of a compatibility issue or possibly a solution... but it seems my system and motu don't mix...

I have/had this same probem too. I tried everything... It often cut out when I minimized a window and most often when it was Internet Explorer when it was on sites with a lot of graphic. I use a Nvidia Geforce 7300 and I suspected that it (or the drivers) might be the problem, so I uninstalled the drivers. Of course no window moving or stuff like that was smooth with the nvidia drivers uninstalled but damn so stable it is. I also put the hardware acceleration on minimum. I guess I have to look for a graphic card with better drivers or whatever it might be that disturbs my 828mkII USB.

We use the XFX 7300GT in most of our DAW's, and have had no compatability issues with MOTU gear. Just a fyi.

It cannot be damaged device, as too many people including me have the same problem.
First thing I thought, I used non-standard cable, not FW 6-to-6, but FW 6-to-4, i.e. w/o power bus. I read somewhere that this cable has reduced bit-rate (100Mbps aginst 400Mbps for 6-to-6 cable).
However, I think it is good enough for any audio bit-rate anyway.
100Mbps can hold any audio flow.
So, this should not be a problem.
Second, I thought about drivers, since my Microsoft XP notified they were not tested.

I'm having the same problem. Motu 828mkii. Firewire. Using 6pin to 4pin firewire. It happens on two different machines, one running xp the other vista. Random drop outs with high pitched noises. It happens on any audio event from a simple mp3 to a full blown DAW jamout. I've disabled wireless, turned off all virus/adaware/firewalls...2gb ram running... I've scoured every resource I can find but so far no luck...
