WWDC 2007, June 11-15

Post by Frodo »

No one's talking... anyone going?

I hear that Leopard Beta is being handed out for free...

Keynote is Monday, June 11 at 10 AM PDT (1 PM EDT)

We've seen new laptops, iTV, the 8-Core, and iPhone is just around the corner. Jobs may be ready to deliver more details rather than to introduce more iToys.

Thoughts?

I'd love to hear more new developments surrounding that word that they dropped from the name of their corporation. :-)

Oh, you mean:

C-O-M-P-U-T-E-R?

It's probably no coincidence that this happened right after the lawsuits with "the other Apple" appeared to be settled.

I know it's a little too soon, but I really think the day that official Logic Pro and Photoshop announcements of 64-bit versions begin to surface, it will be an important date to start appraising how quickly (or slowly) other software developers might follow suit.

Man... even the rumor sites are quiet about what might be going on next week.

Have we in fact seen the next gen. Mac Pros with the release of the 8-core machines?

I sure hope not. Perhaps (he naively hopes!) we'll see the next iteration at this WWDC? :?

Mac 2012 12C Cheese Grater, OSX 10.13.6
MOTU DP8.07, MachFive 3.2.1, MIDI Express XT, 24I/O
Novation, Yamaha & Roland Synths, Guitar & Bass, Kemper Rack

Pretend I've placed your favourite quote here

Interesting--

Not much buzz coming from WDCC, eh?

The 8-Core is fine, really-- it's just the internal architecture that does little more than than the Quads. I sure hope the next gen has better specs under the hood-- and that the Intel bug codes get ironed out a bit better.

Some are more bent on iPhone in two weeks, but I'm not liking some of what I'm hearing:

1. $500-600? Sure, The Razr was sort of in that range when it first appeared, but they are being given way for free in some cases-- $30-40 bucks in other cases. I doubt anyone will be giving away an iPhone.

2. There was something fishy about the name Cingular being tossed around so freely when it was already known that AT&T was going to squat on Cingular's forehead.

3. Fine print about contract requirements and service provider exclusivity seem rather beneath Apple's general approach. Such fine print, once included in ads, has been carefully hidden (or removed) in favor of even finer print.

4. And this:

(sorry-- wrong number!)

In the meantime, it will be another 4 months before we learn anything of any significance regarding how the new OS will really have an impact on DAW work... and will perhaps be considerably longer than that before we actually see it in action.

OS Tabby, anyone?

I was kind of surprised when no additional news came forth either yesterday or today, but maybe they're saving it for the final day of the conference tomorrow?

The news items from Monday were interesting, especially in that they show Apple to be a strong company right now that can afford to diversify its core focus and start delivering multi-platform software tools, media-oriented products (both hardware and software), and hardware upgrades.

Not sure why the stock fell so much, but maybe the investors built up too much beforehand and/or were let down by no major new hardware announcements (wasn't the 8-core already announced earlier, as well as the MacBook Pro upgrade?).

So in spite of Low End Mac's musings last week, it looks like no iMac or Mac Mini updates until September or even later (possibly coincident with the Leopard release). Low End Mac posted several rumours about the death of the Mac Mini. My office Mac Mini arrives next week :-). I think that's where it fits in the best (with a KVM switch), due to a variety of factors (bang/buck vs. iMac is bad, low front bus speed, etc.). Yet I thought it was a big seller, so would still be surprised if it's cancelled.

I'd be surprised, too. It seems that personal computing was headed towards less bulk. The Mini is a great concept, but the need for a monitor with a Mini sort of cancels out the benefits of its compactness.

For some of the things the iPhone can do, and with the popularity of what cell phones and PDA's can already do, it makes me wonder why something like the Mini might have not been as popular (?). It seems to follow in the footsteps of the 20th Anniversary Mac and the Cube. Even more to the point, how could something like the Newton not have done well when PDAs are all the rage?

The iMac as an all-in-one unit will more likely be around for while. But, where Apple wants to go in general will always be an interesting spectator sport.
