CUBASE SX CRASH & NOW CAN'T SEE MOTU 2408's

I'm using two MOTU 2408's, an mk3 & mk1 with Cubase SX on a PC (fast comp, 3 gigs ram). I was working recently trying to do too much too fast and had a crash. Now Cubase won't recognize the MOTU units but my computer states that the MOTU units are working properly. I was going to re-install the MOTU's but the CD ROM's are not compatible with Windows XP (only old school Windows 98 & 95).

Someone suggested that I re-install the drivers for my MOTU units or remove them in add/remove and then re-install them..... I've never tried that and I'm a little nervous because of the CD Rom situation.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what my problem might be or how I can try to fix it I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,

gruvpig

have you tried dowloading the latest driver from the motu website? it works better. also try switching on your computer with the firewire out. when it's fully booted, connect the firewire with the motu off. then power the motu on. i hope it will work for you.

Thanks brother. I really appreciate you taking the time to offer your thoughts on my problem. I'll give it a try tomorrow, when I have time to devote to the cure.

Two things that raise a flag for me.

One, you state you have a fast machine with 3GB of Ram. Is this Ram thats supposed to be running in dual channel? If so, you need even pairs to get decent performance out of it.

Second, have you deleted the asio folder in cubase? That holds driver info and if you get rid of it it will recreate itself. If that gets corrupted, it will not see your audio devices. Find that folder and delete the asio driver info inside, or just move it out of that folder and see if it sees your card.

Thanks for your sugfgestion Hard2Hear.

I have found my ASIO Folder but don't know how to identify the ASIO driver. There are four .dll extensions in the folder that say ASIO and I'm a little nervous about deleting anything when I don't know what it is or what it does. Maybe you can help establish which one is the driver info I should delet (or move).

Here's whats in the folder; Asiodxfd.dll, Asiomm16.dll, Asiomm32.dll & Asiomme.dll, there are a few more things in there but nothing else saying ASIO.

I will wait to hear from you before I do anything else. Thanks so much for your input.

Take that whole folder and move it to your desktop, you don't have to delete it. Then restart Cubase. See if it allows you to select the MOTU ASIO drivers now.

Gruvpig,

Those sound like standard Steinberg components for access to "regular" Windows sound hardware. I'm not sure where the MOTU ASIO software gets added or what else it modifies. There are some "pref resetting" steps for the apps that you can probably find in the Nuendo/Cubase forums. I have seen Nuendo hang onto old MIDI hardware prefs for devices which were no longer on my system and had to delete/rebuild some files too.

I'd also re-run a current (downloaded) MOTU software install as Poprep mentioned, making sure to check an ASIO box if it gives you options, and see that all your i/o is detected and accessible in the MOTU control panel afterward. If you've got a MK3 box in there, I'm guessing you've got some variant of the 424 card and should have had at least one 2K/XP disk from that, but the web drivers would probably be newer anyway.

Good Luck,

George

PS- IIRC, I actually had trouble with the most current 424 software. I think it was made more for the release of the newer (e) versions of the card. Trying something a version or two back may help if it gives you trouble.

That folder is the Cubase ASIO settings.

Dear Hard2Hear,

I tried what you said, removing the ASIO folder from the Steinberg folder and placing it on the desk top. Then opened Cubase and got a message saying it couldn't load the ASIO set-up. Then I put the ASIO folder back where it was and re-loaded Cubase, it booted up fine but still playing output through the computer's ASIO outs, still doesn't see my MOTU's.

I downloaded the mk3 drivers from MOTU's site. Physically took out my PCI-424 Audio Card from the computer and ran the set-up. Then I re-started the computer with the 424 Card installed back in the PCI slot. Computer did not do a "new hardware found" prompt and when I booted Cubase I got the same thing; wasn't seeing the MOTU and was playing through the computer's ASIO.

Do I need to re-install Cubase SX???? I don't want to risk loosing any songs if I re-install. I don't think I will loose anything (being that the songs are on my hard drive) but I want to wait for advice on that matter. It seems like everything I've done renders the same result, no change in my situation.

Another concern I have is my 2408mk1. I can't find drivers for that old unit on MOTU's download section and my CD-ROM only works with Windows 98 & 95. But hey, let's stick to the main problem at hand. I've tried un-installing then re-installing my MOTU drivers but opening Cubase has fostered the same result, it doesn't see the MOTU's and still plays using the computer ASIO outputs. I need my MOTU's to work.

Hard2Hear.... CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE!!

Is this OLD v1 SX? I was assuming it was SX3.

Do you see the MOTU in Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices?

Removing and re-installing Cubase will not delete the songs or audio files you have stored. Worst case it may mess with some user saved presets for plugins.

But first, we need to see if Windows is seeing the MOTU. Check the audio settings in control panel and then see if you can play back audio just thru media player or itunes.

Yes I'm running Cubase SX3. Under Hardware in (Control Panel - Sound & Studio) I see MOTU MIDI Devise (MTPAV) and MOTU PCI Audio Card, so it looks like the computer sees it. I have also checked the MOTU Control Panel and Audio Setup windows and they are showing both of my units, mk1 & mk3 so that part is good too.

I figured I'd just loose pre-sets by re-installing Cubase, was looking for confirmation. Thanks.

Yes I am able to playback through my computer (itunes, real audio) and the "Sound playback" setting under Audio in the Sound Setup (Control Panel) has Sigma Tel Audio as the default device. The only other option under the dropdown is "Modem #0 Line Playback"??? I don't think I've ever seen my MOTU in this window before.

So, yes everything has checked out in the audio setups and yes I am able to play audio through my computer players.

It's just when I open a song in Cubase, I get a window that says "Pending Connection" and it shows all my input channels as (MOTU PCI AUDIO Input Pending). I click out of that box and I'm able to hear the song through my computer audio output. My next move is to dropdown under Devices and go to VST Connections. Under both Input and Output in VST Connections I only have an option for ASIO Multimedia Driver, my motu's are missing.

That's what I'm going through; please tell me if you need more specifics. Could the problem be that the new drivers that I downloaded for my PCI -424 are not in the correct place in order for Cubase to find them?

Thank you so much for helping me!!

hmmm, your MOTU should show up here. You should be able to play back MP3's and such thru your studio monitors and not just out the computer built in soundcard. In fact, I always disable the onboard soundcard to use the interface for everything. Just have system sounds all turned off.

When you ran the driver install, how many different drivers were there to click on? I *think* with the 424 theres 3 of them, I don't have one here to test it through at the moment, just a few firewire MOTUs. There should be windows drivers, though, in addition to the asio drivers in the install pack.

You know?! I just checked again and now my MOTU's ARE showing up in the Sound & Audio Devices under Control Panel. Now we're back in the right direction.

As for the drivers I downloaded; they are in a folder entitled SetUp_1.6.6.11.zip. Opening up this folder there is only one application; SetUp.exe. This is what I ran when I supposedly installed the new drivers.

There is another folder located under Program Files, Motu entitled "AudioWire", which holds 3 .exe files for MOTU (audio setup, cuemix & smpte setup), I can open the MOTU Cuemx and Audio Setup here and see that everything looks to be properly set. Should my drivers be located in this folder, the one under Program Files, Motu??

Any more ideas? I feel we••™re getting closer.

Well the "pending connections" thing can happen any time you load a project which was made while you had different ins and outs active on your audio hardware (or different audio hardware altogether). - no biggie

You need to go into VST connections and re-assign the i/o to what you currently have available (sort of a catch22 if you can't see the MOTU interface in Cubase 8) ). Your projects i/o buss names will be on the left, and there should be actual hardware ports listed on the right, which can be changed. There are also times when you'll need to hit the reset button in the input/output panels of the devices menu to get newly activated i/o to be seen.

Sorry that's not much help, and good luck with it.

Yes, now that Windows sees the MOTU again, check (in Cubase) that your MOTU ASIO is your device in the audio device panel. Then set your busses up with ins and outs in VST Connections. jidis is right about the pending thing. This should get you passing audio again.
