Lags in Playback

I've been trying to figure out how keep playback in DP running while editing regions and do rough mixes. Generally what I want to do is set up memory locations, say, 5 to 10 bars apart, and have DP loop between them constantly while I tidy things up, trim edges, delete unwanted segments, do some automations, etc., then move the two locations ahead 5 or 10 bars, leaving a bit of overlap with the last loop settings, and keep working in this fashion to the end of the song.
All of the methods I've tried result in playback being interrupted fro two to three seconds when I move the right hand memory location. I found that if I don't have looping set on (just have the blue arrows, not the musical repeat symbols) I can move the left location without interrupting playback, but not the right. I'm using the arrow keys with combinations of arrow keys to move the memory locations, and have also tried linking memory to selection and dragging the mouse in the time line. They all result in the same delay.
I've also tried changing some of the hardware setup and studio settings and parameters, but didn't notice any differences.
The song I'm using to figure this technique out has about 20 tracks at 24/44.1. The buffer is set to 1024.
Any help would be appreciated. It's very annoying to have the music keep stopping and starting.

Lucky for you that you weren't around in the tape days then.
Make sure that 'link memory to selection' (shift-/) and 'memory play' (control-T) are both turned off and you should get rid of the short audio drop out when moving the memory markers.

Do you mean Memory Cycle? I don't see any reference to Memory Play. If I do that, is there another means of getting the playbaclk to loop between memory locations?
(I used to record on two Sony SOS decks. A little editing -- lots of retakes.)

I have this same problem, although mine drops out for a good 10 seconds or more. I have not found a solution yet.

Could it be a play buffer filling or resetting thing?
Even if it's just blank space one's adding by dragging the right marker, it could be that DP still has to recalculate and fill said buffers.
Just thinking wit' me typin' digit.

I did play with the prefill and set it to zero, but 1024 samples is WAY LESS than a second, so it shouldn't really be an issue.

Too bad, Grimey.
How about "pre-rendering"?
I'm not really hopeful when it comes to stopping this phenomenon.
I've a feeling the best we might hope for is an understanding of/explanation for what's going on under the bonnet.

I did mess with some of the pre-rendering, but still saw the problem. It just gets worse and worse the more plugins I add.

I'm talking about those two buttons that sit on the 'selection' panel on the control panel (I just held the cursor over them to see their names when I posted) - NOT the memory buttons (cycle, auto rewind & auto-stop). I've just noticed that when they're on you get dropouts in playback when changing the memory locations or selection. I thought it might have something to do with your problem.
Unfortunately, I don't work the same way as you so I can't offer any suggestions.

OK thanks, got it. Called "link playback to memory" in the manual. What sort of technique do you use for this sort of editing? I'm coming from the Cubase method of setting locators and cycle mode, letting playback run and moving locators. That doesn't seem to be an option.

What do you do instead?

Wait the ten seconds

This was never an issue with DP 2.7-DP 3.11. You could do just about anything without even a millisecond of delay. This problem has been here since OS X and DP4. There is no way to get around it and it really SUCKS. Look, I'm one of the biggest DP fans on the planet but I call it like I see it.

By the way Mr. Clifford, I'm an old fart from the days of tape but after all, this is 2007.

OK. So it can't be done. This is not good news. So forget the looping. How do people deal with it? (Short of waiting 10 secs.) I'm dealing with a remix with about 24 tracks that I haven't heard before. Cutting out segments, trimming ends, muting, solos, rearranging verses, bridges, etc., all that works well.
Being able to play different sections quickly and move around the song quickly has to be important to anyone. I'm getting this problem by moving the wiper, using fast fwd or rewind, or anything that moves the wiper from one place to another. The only thing I've found I can do that doesn't cause an interuption is using Pause.

I agree that it would be ideal to get rid of this audio drop-out but I also don't see what's so hard in hitting spacebar to stop playback, changing the loop points, cntrl-opt-c (to jump to the new loop start point), then spacebar again.
