Having lost much sleep and two days with the ASUS P5B m/b I've found out ( as have others in this forum) the Intel965 was rushed and botched.
Despite MOTU trying to sell me a 424 on the grounds that 'modern' M/b's use a 3.5 Volt rail for the PCI that wont boot the 324, which is rubbish and very misleading, I went ahead today and bought a ASUS P5W DH Deluxe which has loads of other features and is very well presented, as well as being quad core friendly, with onboard SATA raid and e SATA etc etc.
I have given my partner the remote so she can switch the studio off from the bedroom!!
The 324 works fine using the march drivers.

That's probably good info for some here. If you've got time, you may want to tack that onto one of the longer 324 motherboard posts here from a while back. I grabbed a couple board models from people in the Nuendo forum a while ago, who had 324's, but there's never really been a definitive list.

BTW- I can fully relate to trying to squeeze extra life out of some DAW components (i/o boxes & cards in particular). I've always felt that if a type of connection (PCI,etc.) was still available on most machines, and the developer was still around, they should see that it still works. I moved from TDM ProTools over a decade ago for that very reason and haven't regretted it. If you've got as many i/o channels as you need, it's nice to be able to upgrade your host's DSP capacity every couple years, without having to break the bank replacing everything else.
