896HD/CueMix?? Input level in Headphones too quiet...

AudioDesk-Garageband(until I choose other DAW)/896HD/Intel iMac OS10.4.9

Having trouble making the input signal loud enough in my headphones to work with.

Using a fully functional Rode K2 mic through 896HD preamps to track acoustic guitar and vocals.

Every meter(DAW, Cue Mix, 896HD) is showing a large in-coming signal, big enough that it should be really loud in the phones, but it isn't.

Playing finger-picked acoustic guitar, wearing closed phones( AKG K240s) connected to the headphone jack on the front of the 896HD, I still hear the actual guitar as loud or louder than what I hear in the cans.

When you play back what you recorded or other pre-recorded material (mp3, CD), it's as loud as expected.

Have tried other mics/cables, input channels, headphones, the usual suspects, etc.

Scenario:
••• 896HD preamp knob and meters up pretty high(near clip)
••• Headphone volume knob and meters also high
••• Monitor level knob set to CueMix bus 1 and turned up high
••• CueMix bus 1 master and input virtual faders all the way up with their meters showing pretty huge in-coming signal
••• CueMix output pair selected as Main Outs...

Should be loud as heck and yet very low volume from mic in phones.

I can't imagine it's meant to work this way. Must be something fundamental I'm missing.

Am used to working in analog and being able to monitor at loud levels if needed.

One reason I want to establish a host based digital setup at home is to play around with mics and mic techniques. Can't do that if I only hear the input signal at a whisper.

Thanks for any advice!
