best CHEAP reverb for DP5.11/OSX10.4.9

Just ordered my iMac, and read the announcement from Waves about not working with 10.4.9. Bummer!!!!! While they're trying to get their house in order, I need a reverb I can actually use with 10.4.9. Anyone have thoughts on a cheap reverb, in say the $100-200 range, that would be "acceptable" while I wait for my WUP to produce its first penny in return on investment?

Maybe WaveArts? They offer full working version of their plug-ins. Check them out... not too bad.

If you already have Waves, go ahead and install and see what happens! You may already own a reverb that, as a result, will certainly qualify as inexpensive.

Don't forget Apple's own (free!) Matrix Reverb.

Depends on what you mean by cheap.

I think the IK Classic Studio Reverb suite sounds awesome. Some of the smoothest reverbs I've ever heard, and by far and away the best virtual reverbs. $299, most places.

They're algorithm-based, not IR based. I'm personally not a big fan of the IR verbs--even the much vaunted Altiverb--but most people seem to disagree with me.

If you have Waves Platinum, the IR-L Reverb is great, and you can download or get a CD of dozens of impulse responses from dozens of great halls. This works in DP 5.11 in AU version, and according to some it works in 10.4.9, though I'm staying at 10.4.8 until this gets worked out.

Meanwhile, check out MOTU's Plate and eVerb. Both are actually not bad. Waves' TrueVerb is not really any better, IMO. There's a free impulse reverb out there called "Magnus Ambience," which is not bad. A bit better than Apple's Matrix AU response.

thanks Shooshie. It sounds like you also use Waves. Do you have any guess as to how long we're talking for true 10.4.9 compatibility? I'm wondering whether we're looking at weeks versus months versus year. reading the Waves website, it certainly doesn't appear that DP is high on their priority list (if it's on the list at all)

They said soon in January. But maybe this 10.4.9 problem will break everyone and cause them to get a fix out for DP and AU.

In terms of a great cheap reverb, the UA plate 140 is terrific, if you like classic reverbs [vs IRs that try to be realistic]. If you don't have a UAD-1 card, it is expensive. If you do, 119 bucks!

I agree it's a cool 'verb plug; I was going to suggest it.
It's not impulse-based though, AFAICT.

I haven't seen it in a while, but seem to remember some nice (interesting) ER presets, or at least programmes which would make great drum ERs with their (long) decays removed or shortened. :D

don't think ambience works on mac intels...

I'm interested in this too - still sat on the fence!

Another trick is to take 2 different reverbs and cascade them together. What about trying the apple reverb cascaded into the DP reverb? The UA reverb is damn good too.

My old Yamaha Rev 5 (now deceased) did this. It had a secondary reverb that was a multiple of the primary. It was a nice 'verb and I still miss it.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that IK has that "crossgrade for all" policy so that if you own pretty much any IK plug you can get the CSR collection for less than $200US.

for altiverb it states

MAS OS X- Digital Performer 5 and up text revision number: 2.0 - December 2006 System Requirements •••Powermac G4 1GHz or higher, Mac Pro 2GHz or higher
'
so no go on the imac?

I'm just a bit worried that installing these plugins could upset the apple cart...

everything sort of working ok here and now

downloaded the demo of

art acoustic

and wave arts

will do a side by side to see what happens....

mike thanks for reminding about that reverb thread!!! You mentioned you always pop up on verb threads!!!

Two strikes in one recommendation! Arrgghhh!!!! I'm gonna retire. You're right, Monkey... it wasn't impulse. But it was pretty nifty, and it ate CPUs like the original Altiverb!

As for UB, I totally forgot what we were talking about. Was the original poster looking for UBs? Duh!
