MacPro and RAM

Can anyone vouch for the RAM that Apple puts in their new MacPros? I've read their marketing spin about the speed vs. heat and how they have optimized it to not use the fan as much, yada yada...

All good for recording, but $1100 for 4GB seems a bit steep. Is there a comparable off the shelf RAM that would even save me a few hundred?

Notice for the Mac Pro they have two choices for RAM, standard heat sink and Apple approved heat sink. Notice also two prices. 4GB Apple approved was around $580 last time I checked.
