Hello all,

First post but longtime MOTU user starting with the old 2408.

I am looking to purchase an 8pre over the Firepod but I have a big concern about the hybrid XLR-1/4" jacks being on the back of the unit because of where I will be mounting the 8pre. I want it to be a clean working space and one it is in the rack I will not have easy access to its rear (insert off color pun here).

I am looking for a "patch" 1U rack unit that has female on the front and male on the back of the unit so I dont have to solder anything. I can then simply run mic / 1/4" cables to the back of the unit.

My every day use will mostly use 4 XLR (with phantom power) and 4 1/4" so if there is a bay with this combination that would be fine too. Every place I have called requires either soldering or offers one or the other.

Any suggestions from the gurus?

I don't have a suggestion in your suggested vein, but I DO know that MOTU says the unit can be installed "backwards" if you prefer. That would put the XLR ins in the front, but would (perhaps unfortunately) leave the level controls on the back.

Bizarre.

Couldn't any manufacturer say this about a similar product?
That's like saying you can flip your rear-vision mirror around, but you'll have to drive backwards.
Or something like that.

You could order the Nuetrik connectors for about $4.00 each and build your own patch bay...

Not sure where you'd find a 1u box with a blank front...but I'm sure you could find something that would work.

Check EBAY too...they always have random stuff like that.

Thanks for your suggestions, I am thinking about making something custom within the desk.

I can't believe they even suggested putting it backwards! lol

Look at that new Presonus 8 channel interface. The inputs are on the front (but the analog outs and inserts are on the back.) This unit was very favorably reviewed in this month's Tape Op. (and I believe it's cheaper than the 8-Pre).

That backward thing had laugh for while!!!

This is how I "solved" it.

I only use the xlr's on the 8pre and then use it in a mobile recording setup.
I've taken D-type XLR solderd a Mic-cable with XLRplug on to it en plugged it in. Easy, fast & no damage to the 8pre.
And when I was add it I did the same with power and FireWire so it's al on the frontpanel.

Though tis does recuire a little soldering, it's not the difficult.

I noticed it's an old photo, the dtype blind is now an Firewire sokket

Nice work. That is EXACTLY what i am looking to do.

Well the 828mkii's are patched with patchcables (all balanced) so that won't need soldering.

The 8pre however just a little cable soldering, no difficult tasks.
