Thinning automation points?

I have been trying to do this by the book but it is not working. I am trying to thin data on a Guitar Rig track that has automation applied to a vocoder effect. I select the track (with data overlay selected) and then try "Thin Continuous Data" from the Region drop down. Is this how to do it? I do not get "audio" type of checkboxes when I select this. I get MIDI type checkboxes.
I forgot to add, I s*ck at MIDI.

I tried it with MW EQ and it works. When you select your thin Continuous data, you have to select which parameter in the dropdown menu.

I have the overlay of continuous data selected in the tracks window. I then double click on a point, that in turn selects all of the points. Then I goto Regions and select Thin Continous Data(I think). I get check boxes for a lot of stuff but I cannot select the Guitar Rig data. This is running as a plugin on an audio track. I think this is not possible that way. I may have to run it as a VI and control everything from the MIDI world.

Maybe. I don't have Guitar Rig but other automation worked like I just describe you. If the parameter shows in the sequence window when you click the insert menu of your track, it should show in the thin cont. Data dropdown menu. But if I may ask, why do you absolutely need to thin the data?
