Old Mac issues

Post by Timeline »

Once again I find myself embroiled in getting my kids old mac to work right.

I now have a G3 tower and a yikes g4 tower. I bought the g3 recently thinking I could move the 800mhz Sonnet cpu, which it came with, over to the yikes machine. Well... no go. No boot yet the yikes G4 has a Sonnet 500 that boots fine.

Also, the G3 works with an 80 Gig HD and the Yikes does not. What's the deal there? Anyone with a clue please help.

Also, I have to use a Radion 7000 video card to get either mac to recognize old monitors and keep them on after boot. The rage card, original, seems to just poop out. Tried taking the battery out and unplugging the machine overnight and it still would not recognize or turn on the monitor for more than a few seconds during boot.

Is there a way to force these rage cards to stay on?

Other than this it's a very nice day in So.Cal today.

Thanks

Go here:

http://www.sonnettech.com/downloads/proc_upgrds_sw.html

And download the software for your processor and system. My Quicksilver G4 never needed their software to run at 1.4 gHz, but it might be you need a patch to have the machine see the processor.

Timeline, that doesn't sound right. . .I am guessing the rage cards may be kaput. The only other thing I can think of is to zap the PRAM, but I suppose taking the battery out would have taken care of that too. . .but it couldn't hurt to try. I usually hold down command option PR until I hear the chime 3 times before I let go.

MLC is dead on re the sonnett site. You may have to do a firmware upgrade too. But Sonnett will explain it all.

(OTOH it occured to me -- you don't say, but maybe the 800mhz zif is a G3 rather than a G4 -- maybe Yikes only wants a G4. But Sonnett site will help you -- if not their techsupport email is good, may take a day or so to get back to you)

Thanks,
I gave up on the rage card and tossed them. Bought another off ebay and now they both work properly.

The last item on the list is getting a pci card on the cheap for an extra drive.

Any recommendations appreciated. Anyway, all is happing now.

thanks again e

What are you looking for -- a firewire card or an internal ATA card? Both the Blue and White and the Yikes can do 2 IDE's out of the box (besides the optical and the zip) (other than that caveat I told you about re the first gen Blue and White IDE controller)

p.s. I love my blue and white. I don't know why. . .
