Turning off the contextual pop-up in DP 5.11

Post by David Helpling »

Hey guys - I am a hard core DP user and I can't find any way to turn off the contextual "auto-help" (little yellow box that pops-up whenever you stop over something). It's getting in the way...

Thanks Much - DH

I don't think you can turn it off. I hope I am wrong as I would also liketo NOT see the little yellow boxes.

I know man..this is such a pain in the butt...I will watch eagerly for any advice on this but my guess is it's in the damn mmac os and DP needs to program itself to not do this. How much you wanna bet that allow DP to be subject to these annoying things allows other things we DO want to happen in DP? The catch 22 of life rears it's ugly head once again...

Well, it's not like it's the end of the world or anything, but a PITA to be sure. If the file of little yellow boxes was seperate from DP, maybe we could just zap it and get rid of them (at least rename it for possible future reference).

What I would like to see is a more modular approach to all software, where you could add or remove features you know you never want to use (like Polar for me). But maybe they really don't make a difference in performance when not in use...Oh well, on to more important stuff - like a trip to Victoria's Secret :)

Well, if you can't get rid of it, then how do you get around, for example, when you hover on the pan and you can't see the knob because that damned thing is blocking it?

Exactly! How can any serious professional continue to defend DP in BS Pro Tools Circles with •••• like this going on...save the kindergarten auto-help •••• for Audio Desk...

It used to be that it took a couple seconds for the things to appear. Now they're there instantly....very annoying.

Why can't they not have a disable, or delay setting option?

You're right oldguitars, but seriously, I've screwed up some automated pans because the help box is blocking my knob. How do YOU do it? At first I thought I was just an idiot (and for the time being I'm still deferring to that explanation) but the bottom line is, you can't see the knob.

Isn't there an old cliche "you can't see the pan knob for the trees."

I *thought* I had found the answer: type this into a terminal window:

defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000

But alas it only works with Cocoa apps (it works in Safari) but not Carbon apps. And NOT in DP 5.11.

The last number in the line above is ms, so the things don't pop up for 10 seconds in that example, for the apps that it actually applies to.

I have read that basically MOTU needs to put a pref setting in for this, there does not seem to be a global disable, as others have noted.

good one, 31! You know, i have never had an issue with them. While i agree they look a little "amateur-ish", they haver never messed me up while writing automation. i will have a look at my work approach tomorrow while mixing and see if i have any insight....

I continue to be astounded by some of the problems that are being overlooked by MOTU before shipping product. While I don't think this particular issue is the end of the world. It is fairly annoying and is such an obvious in your face issue that it makes me wonder if there is any testing going on at all or perhaps Mr. Maggoo is the chief beta tester.

I too can't stand this. We need MOTU to put a disable thing in preferences. I've checked the chat room in apple OSX and they all say it's written into the code and the code writers can disable it. Lets start a new petition, or a sit in like for MACHFIVE V2. Yea that's gonna work. BTW they are called HELP TAGS.

Are not those yellow boxes the only way to know the exact dB value of aux sends in mixer window ?

I use this reading alot when adjusting effects.
Do not want to get rid of them.

BTW the help boxes used to be a user's choice in OS9 !
